Install Just GalCiv II DL w/Gold Edition?

Hi all,

I'm a noob - I've been reading up on things, but I just wanted to confirm that if I have the Gold Edition set, can I install GalCiv2 just like I did from the original GalCiv2 CDs? So I can use all the GalCiv2 mods and things without having to use any of the features of DA (and if possible not have any of the extra DA files, playing w/a laptop and am low on space). Is that possible? I have GalCiv2 now and a friend of me wants it so I was thinking I'd give him my original CD and key and buy the new Gold Edition for myself, but I'd like to be able to just play the original for now, once I've got that handled then I'll try out the new stuff in DA.

So is there an option to just install GalCiv2 from the Gold Edition CDs as if it were the original set?

Thanks,
Peter

AFAIK there is no option to install *only* GC2, but it's not a big deal since DL and DA are still separate programs. You can run either DA or 'pure' DL as you like.

I don't know if the Gold CDs give you the option to install only GalCiv2, but if you do have both installed, you have the option of running GalCiv2. It will be the old GalCiv2 you remember, with none of the additional features of Dark Avatar.

Ok, thanks for the reply. So they are accessible by seperate icons on the desktop then, with no overlap in terms of features? Oh and is the Gold edition version of DL 1.4 and CE?

How much of a size difference is there between when GC2 is installed and DA as well?

Thanks,
Peter

There are separate icons which run two separate launchers (GC2Launch.exe and DALaunch.exe). The separate launchers call two separate executables (GalCiv2.exe and GC2DarkAvatar.exe). So you actually have two different ways to run each game.

The Dark Avatar folder is currently only taking up another 280 MB.

I'm pretty darn sure the version of GalCiv2:DL on the Gold discs will be 1.5, since it has to be at 1.5 to run Dark Avatar properly (and as kryo said, he's pretty sure you can't install DL without installing DA).

1.5? I thought that was the version just for DA. Wouldn't I be running the original GalCiv2 in 1.4? I'd like to use some of the mods - one is just for DA, but the other (the Star Trek one) says it requires 1.4. Does this mean with a Gold Edition install I wouldn't be able to run those mods?

Thanks,
Peter

Since Dark Avatar is an expansion pack, and needs GalCiv2 to run, then GalCiv2 also needs to be updated to 1.5. So the version on the Gold discs for both is going to be 1.5.

As for mods, if they're popular, I assume the authors will get them working with 1.5 ASAP (if they're not already compatible).

Damn, I didn't expect it would be so restrictive. I guess I'll just keep Gal Civ II for now and forget about getting the Gold Edition. They have updates for that mod, but not to 1.5 yet...they are still celebrating getting it to work with 1.4 in December. I'm not sure what sorts of mods I'll want to try, not being able to use any that were released prior to 1.5 is a real drawback

Thanks for explaining it.

Well, he won't be able to activate the game on his computer unless you gave him also the e-mail associated with your serial Id.

Mods for DL should be largely unaffected by 1.5--only some minor tweaks should be needed, if any (animation paths might need tweaked in RaceConfig, for example). Worst case, some images don't show up until the files are tweaked.
