Rapid Reality Games has announced Phylon an upcoming MMORTS which they hope to have out on April 6, 2007. The announcement also comes with the start of the closed beta, provided you are a subscriber to IGN or FilePlanet.
Phylon will pit players against each other in FPS style Deathmatch and Domination modes while in a persistent world of three varied factions. Players can take part in the battle as a member of the Blobic Imperium, the Amphibian resistance, or the Terran colonists as they vie to advance in skill, allowing them to unlock "hundreds of unique items, including jet packs, energy shields, and weapons."
The title will feature instanced combat, allowing for hundreds of users in a single battle, all portrayed in a comic book style. Rapid Reality is striving to make it so that a players skill level will often determine their fate, not simply their playtime. Web-based ranking systems will also be a major staple for the title, tracking players and guilds.
Oddly enough the First-Person Shooter title will actually be portrayed in the third-person. Rapid Reality states that a "Unique, third person camera and targeting system allows players to fight in an FPS style but with the expanded field of view of a third person perspective."
Seems more like a MMOTPS!
