I just got Galactic Civ II Gold Edition. - Nerver play the game before.
Questions.

1. I can not get the ships to upgrade. I click on the upgrade button - no money is taken away and the ship staus remain the same. What I'm doing wrong.

2. Is there any place that I can go and get a tech tree map? I'm having a hard time finding the right techs for the ships.

Any help given would be great.

To upgrade ships, click the upgrade button to open the upgrade dialog. You then have to choose the new type of ship to change it to (any designs you have of the same hull size are options), and how you will pay for it.

I'm having a hard time finding the right techs for the ships.

Frankly the 'core' combat ships are pretty much useless for anything but looking nice. It is strongly recommended that you just design your own using whatever your current level of technology is. It's more fun to make your own, and the AI designs its own ships too so you need to in order to really compete.
