ethical ramifications of selling off planets

Does selling a planet to another empire increase your "evilness?" And would it cause dissent within your empire? It would seem pretty ethnically questionable to barter away segments of your population, even under dire circumstances. The only instance I could see it being justifiable is if the planet was already near revolt against your empire.

*bump*ing this up since I posted it last night and it got lost in all the craziness. (stardock, don't you think you should put up a proper forum, like UBB, now that this place is going to get swamped with players?)

I traded with a minor for technologies once, It was a planet in their neck of the woods, ok morale.
I could not discern any impact, they eventually came back to the fold, with the minors race.

Over the long term, I dont think it affected my "good" rating.

Trading a planet away doesn't have any impact on your place in the good - evil spectrum. As far as I know the only thing that will effect a change there is your response to the random events that require a moral decision.

Hm, that isn't very consistent, is it? Killing off the native population of a planet is regarded as evil, selling your own population is not? That should have _severe_ repercussions on morale on other systems ...

I think you should be able to give away planets in exchange for anything, but if you do I think that you should be required to evacuate all your population with a certain amount of time and put them on other colonies of yours.

Say you give away a planet with 1 billion people on it. You then negotiate a reasonable time with the other civ as to allow for evacuation. Then you must use transports or colony ships to evacuate that planet within the alloted time frame. Some colonist will not leave the planet cause they regard it as home and so they become part of the civ that takes the planet over, this will also happen to colonist if you don't evacuate within the time frame. Once you have them aboard transports and colony ships, you can use them to add to the populations of existing colonies or settle a new planet.

You could also have the option to not evacuate at all and just leave them and this should affect you alignment.

I have to agree with sanska. Even if there is no alignment shift, there must atleast be enough of a morale hit empire wide to feel the pinch.

There is no doubt that it is an ethic question and should impact the "good-evil" balance.
I dont think the game can handle these events at this time.
Should post this in the suggestion thread

i don't think there should be any alignment shift. but i do think morale should suffer based on your government type ( no hit for imperial to massive hit for federation ).

I agree; I think this should have an impact of sorts. You are basically selling out your people; that has to lower your approval and/or cause ethical ramifications..

If there's going to be an alignment shift, you'd also have to take into account the alignment of the empire you're selling/giving the planet to.
For instance, if your civilization is as evil as they come, and you sell off a planet to a bunch of good guys, that would be doing the citizens of that planet a favour, so your alignment should shift to *good*, not to evil just because you're selling the planet.

And if you're a good guy and you sell a planet off to a really evil race, then it should be a rather larger penalty.

Not sure I really agree with this though, since it's not always possible to avoid giving up planets if you're really under the hammer and need to buy yourself some time?
