The Venezuelan Solidarity Network has called upon U2 frontman Bono to halt the production of Pandemic Studios' Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. The group has begun a petition in hopes of gathering the signatures of various religious leaders before submitting it to the artist.
For those who haven't heard, Pandemic Studios merged with BioWare in November 2005 under the direction of the private equity firm Elevation Partners, whom Bono is a founding partner and board member of.
The title under question follows guns for hire as they strive to overthrow a "power hungry tyrant" in Venezuela, an obvious link to current real world politics. The letter (PDF format) in part reads: "Millions of Venezuelans fear an invasion from the U.S.; knowing that a company that works for the US military has created a game in which their country is completely destroyed will increase those concerns."
The quip about "knowing that a company that works for the US military" refers to Pandemic Studios' work on an Army-commissioned training program which was polished for release after its creation and became Full Spectrum Warrior.
The signature deadline is March 31, 2007, with the letter being sent to Bono on April Fool's day (maybe he will think its a joke?). Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is slated for release later this year for PC, PS2, PS3 and Xbox 360.
