Ship Repair?

Can ships be repaired if they are returned to a planet with a shipyard or something? Or do they have a finite amount of hit points and when they are gone thats it.

Early in the game you need to put them in orbit for them to repair. Later you can build starbases that have a repair facility that repair all the ships in a sector... also there are varying levels of ship techs you can research to have them repair themselves over time.

You can upgrade your Starbase with a repair module which will add 1 hp to any dameged ship in the sector every turn I think. You can also research repair, and advanced forms of it, which will allow your ships to repair on their own. Higher the tech faster the repair.
