Impressions Thread

An impression thread usually gets started for every new game that comes out (there is in fact one for GalCiv, pretty positive so far!).

So this is this boards Impressions Thread. Please let us know what you think of the game! Gameplay most of all, graphics, sound, addiction factor, that sort of thing.

I'll be getting this after work today, most likely, so no impressions from me until tomorrow probably. :p

My first impression was good. I'm still in the process of playing my first game so I haven't figured out all of the gameplay elements, but thus far the game has been good enough to make me want to learn everything. The graphics are probably the best I've seen in a 4x game, so I'd have to say they are good. One thing that helps is that the interface seems sleek and high-tech. The sound is what I would expect from a space based 4x game, but i think I will utilize the mp3 player option in the long run. Although I don't understand everything about the game yet, I still lost sleep the first night I had it, so it is addictive.

I got the game last night and wasn't able to play until my son went to bed. By then I was tired myself and only got to spend an hour or so with it. :p

1st impression:
Learning curve. The game on the surface looks good. But, like Shrek says, "This game is like an onion, many layers." Not being a TBS or RTS guru, spending alot of my time in flight simulation, I'll need a few hours to get a hold of the UI and game mechanics.

I can't wait to spend some more time with it this evening and explore some more of the depth. :D

OK, just finished my first game on a 5x5 map with all races set to "beginner". It was a bit too easy, especially because the Drengin eliminated the Yor early in the game. Otherwise, it's been more fun than my first game of Civ3. I hope the AI starts counteracting my strategy on higher levels. Basically I just waited and delivered Frigates like mad while steadily expanding my cultural influence.

I was pleased with the fact that I could essentially just jump into the game and have some understanding of the game mechanics and interface with almost no reading. Not something I was capable of doing with any of the MOO series.

I'm happy with my purchase.
