Ships not saving

When I start a new game, none of the ships I have designed from previous games show up in the ship design screen. I have the "save ship design to disk" option checked, and the designs are saving to the My Documents/My Games/GC2DarkAvatar/ships folder. Is this a feature that does not work in the sandbox mode, or is there another setting I need to change? Am I missing a tab somewhere? Any help is appreciated.

Are you using the same style, and have you researched the necessary techs for the designs?

Yes. Using the same style and researching the same techs. I did notice that the game saves multiple copies of the ship in the ship folder. They just never re-appear from game to game.

Same here. I thought that by saving a template to my hard drive my custom ships would be available for building in new games, provided appropriate technologies have been researched. Not happening. If I reload a saved game where they were created, then there they are and available to build. Yes, they are listed in the game's ship directories--they're just not available in-game. Now I have to "re-invent" them for each new game. Is that the way it's supposed to be or what am I doing wrong?
