Valve's PR junkie and director of marketing Doug Lombardi has come forward to speak on the recent reports of a hacker named 'MaddoxX' who claims to have gained access to some of Valve's customer information. Lombardi states flat out that "There has been no security breach of Steam." But adds that "The alleged hacker gained access to a third-party site that Valve uses to manage the commercial partners in its Cyber Café program. This Cyber Café billing system is not connected to Steam. We are working with law enforcement agencies on this matter, and encourage anyone with more information to e-mail us at [email protected]."
So although Valve itself claims not to have been hacked, something certainly happened to the Cyber Cafe program's data. The hacker himself doesn't seem worried that Valve and other law enforcement agencies are now on the case and as of press time, is still holding the credit card information ransom even posting some information of transactions from March 12 2007 as proof of its existence.
