What is Stardock Central and why does the update freeze my PC...verrrry unhappy

Just what is Stardock Central and what is it supposed to do? I downloaded the 1.1 Patch/bonus pack via IE. There was some unintelligible blurb about using SC to do the update but absolutely no hint on how that was to be done. I installed and ran SC, it updated itself and then sits there....no access to anything related to GalCiv...can't access the download residing on my PC or the internet. So I try to execute the 6.8 meg download....Instant PC freeze requiring a hard re-boot. I am running a 1.8 gHz PIV, 768 megs ram, 64 meg GeFOrce2 video card and the latest Win XP updates. The unupdated GalCiv runs fine. This whole download thing is making me furious...but I am trying to be calm...think nice thoughts. WHY is something so simple made so complicated? I have a slow dialup connection and this is a major problem and source of frustration. I have spent 2 hours on this so far with nothing to show for it>

Thanks, but I finally figured it out. This was an unecessarily frustrating experience. The system is really nice, but there is no explanation of it. In the Stardock website download section it would have been so simple to say "Run Stardock Central. Press the Drengen tab. The progams are listed, both the version on your machione and the latest available. Dbl click to update." This would have saved me two hours. And I still would like to know why manually downloading and then running the executable froze my PC.

Brad,
Might I suggest adding the instructions to the email you send out with the serial number.
Straight after (or before) the link to the SCD download.

At the moment, if people aren't familiar with the process, they may think the link is either the galciv download itself, or a preinstaller (which in a way it is) and expect something automatic to happen.

Now my sdc hassles have been sorted out, I do think it is a good way of getting updates... but it is not really apparant or obvious when you first order the game.
