"Mass" multiplayer

I wondered if, in a future GalCiv's MP, you ever thought of permitting something like a person having a server or something and which could permit to have worlds with something like tens (hundreds?) of players. A little like Ultima Online that can be played on someone's computer.

The developer's have repeatedly said that Galciv will never have multiplayer.

Please understand that I do not wander on these forums all day since a decade... And I thought that Galactic Civilization II or however you name it, was something like a multiplayer implementation.

I do recall a note that there may be a multiplayer version, but it would be distint from GalCiv and it's expansions. This was quite a while ago, so I have no clue as to if/how it will eventually proceed.

I think GalCiv has the potential to become a fine MMOLG. It is relatively simple to get into so none of the confusion associated with first getting into massive multiplayer games should result. Also the game mechanics - especially trade, Influence, diplomacy warfare etc would be fine multiplayer fodder. With the addition of heros' and a few bits and bobs it coud really be a bit special. However we have X2, Braben is apaprenlly working on an Elite OLG and PC Gamer had a feature n s very tidy looking Elite On line clone from a team called CCP In Iceland - so perhaps the resources hould go into making GalCiv - and GalCiv2 teh best single player game it can be??

Clearly the coding would be a nightmare as with all MMOLG's and would have litle to do with gameplay so perhaps Brad an dthe team really don't fancy it?

While the idea of a MMGalCiv is appealing, I dont think its practical. Its not like Diablo where you can join a game and complete some quest. A Gigantic galaxy game can take 40+ hours to complete. How would you get 6+ people to play that game together?

The direction is a single player with a very good AI. Look at IBM's Deep Junior. Another set of chess matches are planned against Gary K. Junior doesnt have the number crunching Deep Blue had but he's smarter. Gal Civ needs 5 AIs so smart that they seem real.

Stardock tried to put GC into a multiplayer environment (Stellar Frontier) and it turned me off. If you subscribed to the whole Drengin.net stuff then you have it available.

Well it could make people join together by having a turn/day, or less if the turns take more time. Something like that. It is like that Earth 2025 works and they have thousands of players...

Stellar Frontier exists in the GalCiv universe. The Drengin, Arceans, and Terrans are all represented. It's massively multiplayer.

Well about internet or network play I don't care much.
But being able to do hotseat would be yummy.

A while ago there was a poll about multiplayer or singleplayer where you could vote about it.
I did vote single player because having a really good singleplayer and multiplayer is very hard, it's usually the 1 or the other.

Besides in these type of games, multiplayer (hotseat, internet, lan) would only be a bonus while have excellent AI is a must.

And imagine an email game with 8 players on a gigantic map, it would take years to finish LOL
