Ship bonuses/combat not working properly!

First of all let me begin by saying forgive my ignorance if I'm not understanding something here, but please help me to do so.

I remember researching some stuff that gave hitpoint/range/weapon bonuses to ships while I already had a few starfighters and a corvette out there. I checked them to see if the bonuses applied and they didn't. I don't think they applied to the new ones I built after that but I'm not sure because they were frigates and I don't know their starting stats. Anyway I went and attacked a minor league planet and I instantly got vaporized even though they only had 2 ships and I had 10 which should have been enough with all the bonuses. And to top it all off it didn't even show the combat between the ships taking place. So my questions are...

1) Do researched ship bonuses only apply to ships you build afterwards (ie. range +10, hitpoints + ??% etc.)?

2) Does ship to ship combat even show up (I have the options turned on), I haven't seen any ships battling it out like in the Moo series?

Your help (and understanding) with these issues would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully I'm missing something here and its not the game's fault, which I do like by the way.

If you attack a planet with your ships no combat shows. If you are strong enough the shield on that planet disappears after you have destroyed the ships orbitting the planet. If you are not strong enough then your ships explode and disappear. If you attack a ship in space you will see the ships fire at each other.

Thanks for the swift reply. Does anyone know what the problem is with the ship bonuses not showing up?

I didn't notice ship bonuses being applied on existing ships. I think it might only apply to ships created after you have the technology available to make improved ships. If that is the case, I wonder if there is a way to upgrade an existing ship for a reduced cost, perhaps using a starport, etc?

ship bonus' are applied to existing and new ship I think. I've never seen a problem with ship bonus' not applying.

Invictus, when you attacked 2 ships with your 10, what were the attack, defense and hit points? If you used 10 star fighters to attack 2 defenders in orbit around a planet then you would indeed be dead! Your attack value would apply against their defense value and they would loose some hit points (assuming the random factors worked in your favour), then their attack (increased by the planet) would work against your defense value and destroy you (having few hit points). They would get some experience and the next ship would have a harder time,
