Ship Orders

When you click on the little I button it gives you info on your ship along with certain orders to select like sector sweep. What does the Sentry and Gaurd button do? I've pressed gaurd and the ship says gaurd underneath it, but what is it gaurding? And isn't Sentry another term for watchpost or gatekeeper?

Sentry: ship wakes up if any ship comes in sensor range, Guard: ship wakes up if an enemy ship comes in sensor range.

Thanks, the sensor range is measured in parsecs. How can I tell how far a parsec is?

Each sector is 12 parsecs across, I believe.

Those little squares that make up sectors are parsecs! The ones you move your ships around in (each ship takes up 1 parsec).
