We have the same thing over here, its just called the Patriot Act. It isnt as bad sure, but it can easily get there since as far as I know the Democrats are just as eager to change or bend certain rights to attain an easier way in retaining political stability.

Exactly if your not breaking any laws you have nothing to fear from the patriot act. Its simple as that.

TGE, you should know this by now, any bill is non-threatening if its precedence is non-threatening, regardless of its powers.
I could sign a bill that allowed people to plant flowers and blow up small countries, if I signed the bill with the intent to plant flowers then nobody should be concerned about the precedence that "blowing up small countries" sets.

fortunately its not the same type of racial discrimination as its predecessors. this ones more 'in self defense'. still sucks, but not as much so.

Actually, that's kind of the problem and where the infringing occurs. You don't have to break any laws, or have any agency to have proof of it in any shape or form for all or any civil liberties to be suspended. That's the problem.

There have been plenty of reports of innocent people, not even Muslim or Middle Eastern, targetted and affected by the Patriot Act, that have absolutely no connection to any wrong doings. This means, you, me or anyone can be targetted and have absolutely no rights (defense) against being subjected to detention. For example, I have read newspapers that documented cases of persons who's names were inputted by mistake, or mistyping, or simply by having the same, or even similar, names to someone on a list somewhere. One was actually a head-of-state of some country, although there was quite a bit of fallout, so perhaps someone else might remember. There are also long lists of privacy issues that this creates but it's not a direct relation to this discussion.

P.s. This isn't exactly a "police-state." Most of Europe technically, by today's political science definition, already is a police state, certainly most Western Europan countries are. It's a style of policing. What we're talking about is simply greater authoritarianism in the US and UK states.

the alien act (this is the one allowing people to be kicked from the country, correct?) abused... yes, but if you look at the precedence they set, they were repealed rather quickly.
