F*%k and double f*%k

My husband had an MRI done today.

A little over an hour later, his doctor called.

He has a complete tear of his ACL.  He has, in other words, blown his knee. Totally.

It's going to require surgery to fix it, and they can't do it laparoscopically.

Fuck.  Double fuck, even.

He says that he's a real tough mofo, walking around with blown out knee for 2 weeks.  I told him that I think he's confusing dumb ignorance with machismo, but I secretly agree with him (Don't tell him I said that, though).

We've talked briefly about his career prospects with this new diagnosis, but right now we're trying to focus on getting him fixed.  However.....I don't know that he's going to be going back to Raven school.  The road to recovery from this kind of surgery (oddly enough, one of the surgeries that I've been in the OR to observe was a knee reconstruction after an ACL disruption) is long and can be difficult, especially if people try to do too much too soon (my husband is a repeat offender of that).

The one good thing about all of this is that at least now we have a definite diagnosis.

It's the prognosis that I'm worried about.

Very sorry to hear this, dharma. I know people who have dealt with this, and yes, it can be tough. I'll keep you guys in our thoughts.

I'm sorry to hear of D's misfortune. But you're right... he's a tough bugger, mentally too, and he (and you) can pull through this, get past it.

Let me know if there's some small way I can help.

That's a bummer but at least it's fixable.

I'm so sorry, dharma. I hope that the surgery and recovery will go well.

Ouch, ouch, ouch.  Definitely not something fun to have to deal with for him, but hopefully he'll make a complete recovery over time and then be able to worry about and deal with career choices and such at that time.

I CAN be rough, you're right.  However, we're both prepared to do whatever it takes to get him repaired and back to school, no matter how long it takes.

I will, and thank you.

Yep.  Like I said, our focus right now is not on whether he'll be able to go back to school, it's on getting his knee repaired and him back to 'normal' again.

He'll be ok.  We'll both be ok.

((((karen))))

Thanks, and right back at ya!

That does suck! I wish him the best, and you as well. In this case however, tell him to follow the Docs advice so it heals faster (after surgery). Machissmo is great - to a degree.

Knees, not a good think to blow out. I hope he doesn't end up with arthritis. I know a lot of people who have gotten knee replacements and they've actually come a long way. Hope it never gets to that.

I'm sure the biggest struggle keeping him from doing too much too soon. I don't envy you with that fight. Here's hoping for a very successful surgery and quick and thorough recovery.
