id Software has finally shown off a bit of their new engine which they are using to create their super secret new game but chose an unusual convention for the announcement. John Carmack joined Steve Jobs on stage as part of the Worldwide Developer's Conference 2007 where he took the time to show off screen shots of the new engine in action. As a shock to no one, the engine looked spectacular, showing off huge, open areas in incredible detail.

Carmack had the following to say about his new baby: "So the last couple of years at iD we've been working in secrecy on next-gen tech and a game for it... this is the first time we're showing anything we've done on it publicly.  What we've got here is the entire world with unique textures, 20GB of textures covering this track. They can go in and look at the world and, say, change the color of the mountaintop, or carve their name into the rock. They can change as much as they want on surfaces with no impact on the game."

Carmack then confirmed that they would be releasing the still unnamed title for Mac along with a PC, PS3 and Xbox360 version, joining with Electronic Arts who a few minutes before announced they would support Apple as well. Carmack also mentioned that there would be more information from id at this year's E3.
