Debt: VERY DANGEROUS!!

Once thing I noticed about debt, if you get into it early in the game, you are DEAD! You won't have enough moral on the planets immediatly, and the moral cost of debt is so huge, it is very difficult to recover.

Although, in my last game in a medium size map, got hit by a recession. At the start of the recession the treasury was at ~3000, by the end of the recession the balance was ~ -2000, dropped ~5000BC, and then managed to set the optimim tax rate and got back into the black without losing any worlds.

If you get into debt then SELL.

Find a minor race and sell everything if you have to!

Another way to cripple yourself early in the game is to saddle the empire with too many lease payments. If all your cash-flow is going towards paying off leases it's not being used for all the other things it could be.

Be very sure of the benefits before committing to a lease.

I was in debt for years in the early game and didn't have much problem with morale. Eventually I used my trade goods and techs to sell to minor races to get out of debt.

About trade goods: Do they only help in diplomacy or do they actually give your empire a bonus?

Agreed with staying out of debt and avoiding leases, though I'm hardly an authoritative voice on good GC play. I just seem to do better if I use my initial balance to crank my production up to 100%, then adjust it to a small positive monthly change once it gets low. Gives me a good jumpstart on tech and I get to crank out a good number of ships until I have to turn it down.

In the early game, 10BC a turn is a big deal, so I try to avoid leases.
