Anyone disappointed with the game yet?

Hi,

just curious, after MOO3 came out, the IG forum turned into a "Flame-Forum" . But I am surprised that up to now nobody complained actually about the gameplay or the game itself. Is this game so0000 GOOOOD?

I love it. Sometimes the AI pisses me off though (not that they are stupid, but they kill me for no obvious reason :((( )

You are probably too 'good' or 'evil' to their liking.
The Drengin for instance piss me off since they really like trying to extort money from me.
But this is all in an in-game-being-pissed-of-as-an-emperor kind of way so nothing buggy or anything. ;)

The game rocks. :CONGRAT:

There has been some annoyed posts, but most of those aren't directed at the game, they're directed at the delivery system for the game, Stardock Central.

The game itself has probably as many bugs as MoO3, but most of them aren't showstoppers, and the game is otherwise very solid, very fun to play and entirely too addictive. :)

Yeah, my complaints with Stardock Central, and while I'm still screwed in terms of lost files (I ultimately had to re-format/re-install Windows) they've at least been straight up about the problem, and fixing it.

...too bad this has left me with no time to play the darn game...

Great game but the documentation is lacking. I think Stardock needs to put together a more comprehensive player's manual that addresses many of the the gameplay questions that are littering this forum. :notsure:

Why didn't it kill my Windows installation? I need to install anyway... ;)

Otherwise, I'm a little depressed by the fact that the "normal" AI just ignores my presence and the Torians and Drengin eradicate me while they're going at each other. Always. There's no way around it. I don't want to play on beginner level, that's just boring. Guess I'm gonna eat something and give it another try. Great game, wish I'd be better at playing it.

I'd have to agree with humane. A nice, big, beefy manual is what this fantastic game deserves.

To the point of the original poster, I'd have to agree with others in this thread and say "nope". A solid beta program seems to have soaked up a lot of complaints before release. MY only complaint is that I have to work during the day and can't play GalCiv! Midnight came ridiculously fast last night. Was able to play two complete (and great!) GalCiv games, though. :d

I have minor complaints about the interface and graphics, but the game and gameplay are nice. Some spreadsheets would have been great for checking out large empires, too. I can't seem to find a "next fleet" button, etc. Minor stuff that can be fixed.

Isn't that the standard nowadays though? Hey Brad, are we going to see a Prima Strat Guide for GalCiv? :d

I'm definitely enjoying it and have no complaints other than wishing I was better at the game. But of course for me that's where the fun is: Just when you think you're starting to get down a strategy, the AI will force your hand/timetable and make you react to what they're doing. I've definitely never seen a 4X game where each game varies so much and the only real factor to that is the behavior of the AI. Pretty cool.

Solops - Agreed that the more documentation the better, but for the "next fleet" button, use the "find" button on the lower right (next to the turn one), that'll advance to your next fleet that doesn't have any orders. Alternatively you can also pull up the fleet listing and look for fleets that don't have the movement arrow on them.

Manual is "at par", no very subpar from the rest ;)

The game is very fun and tense, but I find that colony/economic management is really too straightforward : galaxy level sliders and "planet quality" as sole planet attribute.

Planet-level sliders and some "specials" on planets (mineral rich, bad atmosphere, good weather, artifacts, ...giving various +/- modifiers) will make all this more colourful, immersive and interesting, without breaking the game design IMHO

Also I don't like "limitless capacity" colony ships : I can transfer all of the Earth population all at once !! Quite hard to believe ...

Game play, there are no complaints, but I have one issue.....The game is way too ADDICTING!! I have MOO3 and frankly, it was a bit on the boring side. GalCiv does cry out for a beefy manual which is the only negative on the otherwise fantastic program. Now if you will excuse me.... I have to boldly go where no man has gone before........ ;)

I'm very happy with my $40 investment in this game. There is some room for improvment and the developers know that and have built that into the project. They've created a great framework which they can continue to flesh out in more detail. A very smart move.

if you can believe in SPACE SHARKS, you can stretch yourself and buy into limitless colonyship capacity! ;)

Some time ago, I actually put some thought into an "evacuate Earth in 6 months" scenario, and I came up with numbers that were staggering. Considering a population of 6 billion (6e9) people to be evacuated in 180 days, you'd have to put close to 1.4 MILLION poeple into ships PER HOUR. Nonstop, 24/7. Putting my record planet population in GalCiv (21bn) into a colony ship in 1 month would push that number to a little over 29 million/hour. So even if you could build a ship large enough, you'd have to build it all doors. Perhaps it'd be easier to just stick a thruster to the planet? ;) Space sharks are easy in comparison.

Nowlet's consider just for fun that each person would need 2 cubic meters including all life support on that ship (we'll ignore stuff like generators, engines or storage for now). You're now thinking of a volume of 42bn cubic meters. Now let's think Borg and make a cube of it. That cube would be about 3.5km long in every dimension, but much less comfortable than a Borg cube since you'd have no space to move and no food. Consumables are another book, so let's just freeze the inhabitants.

Some things are perhaps best left unpondered... thinks like a 3.5km cube full of frozen humans. Unless you're a Drengin, then you might be VERY grateful for that mega-snack. :d

I disagree. And I sincerely hope the dev crew doesn't increase micromanagement tenfold by adopting such features. That isn't the point of GalCiv.

In response to the original message: I'm having a good time with the game - yeah there are some issues - but overall they are minor. I have both recent releases of 4X games and consider them to be quite a bit different. For now I will focus on Gal-Civ, there will be opportunities for other play as time goes on.

This game surpassed my expectations. First game to do that for a couple years.

Hey Arne and all...I love this game. Just got it today and am still learning. Very fun. It's especially refreshing to have a developement team that really cares about the project and the players. This game is worth every penny. I was a bit disappointed with MOO3(and I'm a long time MOO fan), so I'm sticking by this game!! Thanks Brad and team for a SUPER game!

Yes, absolutely fabulous game, try the same game environment, but with different settings for the AI intelligence, and you will see WHAT difference THAT makes! :)
