Electronic Arts has announced that it is restructuring itself into four distinguishable divisions that will operate with their own studios and publishing teams. EA hopes that the reorganization will "streamline decision-making, improve global focus, and speed new ideas to the market."
The first three divisions are pretty straightforward and expected, EA SPORTS, EA Games and EA Casual Entertainment. EA Sports will house all your typical sports titles from Madden to Nascar and probably the old EA SPORTS BIG brand as well. EA Games will be host to just about everything else that isn't a casual title including the Command & Conquer and Need for Speed franchises. Last but not least is EA Casual Entertainment which will be focused on casual as well as family friendly titles such as the Harry Potter franchise, POGO.com and the former POGO brand.
Last but certainly not least is an entire division dedicated to EA's cash cow, The Sims. Yes, The Sims will now be a division of the largest third-party game developer/publisher in the world. The franchise itself has been a test-bed for the restructuring with the Sims franchise growing aggressively since the restructuring was initiated. This division will shockingly revolve around the Sims brand in all of its incarnations.
"This transition will be implemented over the course of the coming months," said EA Chief Executive Officer John Riccitiello. "EA is privileged to have a deep bench of proven talent and our new structure encourages people to bring great ideas into the market more quickly. There will be more games and services for core consumers and new gamers and better focus on operational efficiency."
