Played for first time last evening and it made me think of the MOO2 (yes 2 not 3) times.... Love it! :d

Got a lot to learn because I'm running out of cash and my military power sucks and morality is way to low but else it's great. I surely know what I'll be doing the next few weeks (months ? LOL )...

If you're running out of cash make sure you build trade routes and sell stuff to other races (preferrably for a monthly tribute).
In my games so far most of my income comes from these things. Taxes alone are not enough to keep an empire running full speed :)

Another nice thing about trade is that your partners become really attatched to you.

So, if you trade a lot, and your biggest (sole, actually) enemy has some major internal problems with 'freedom fighters', you might actually get a cultural victory out of it. (Thus I won my very first game - I RULE! Playing on 'Beginner', so perhaps I rule less than I think...) ;)
