plotting a path through unknown space

ships should not be plotting a route through unknown space to join a fleet.

i know that the ships are following the shortest route.

but how does a captian know that the shortest route is through unknown space.

Did your ships actually plot a course through multiple unexplored locations, or just through one which you'd found two routes going to already (but not actually visited)?

they went through two grav wells and stopped in the second one to fight

both were unexplored and no trade ships of mine had been in them

it also seems that some games they do plot a route only through known space as in the last game i am playing
