Finally some news that didn't come straight from E3. PopCap Games has announced that they have acquired Retro64, developer of retro-arcade action and puzzle titles. The move will boost PopCap's already impressive game portfolio and expand its number of internal developers once again.

The purchase, which was for an undisclosed sum, came about due to PopCap's impression of numerous Retro64 titles. Mike Boeh, Retro64 founder and chief producer is now tasked with running a satellite development studio for PopCap that will continue focusing on original, casual titles for multiple platforms.

"I've worked with Mike several times over the past decade, and we recently published Retro64's 'Venice' game, so all of us at PopCap are familiar with Retro64's design and development philosophy," noted Jason Kapalka, co-founder and chief creative officer of PopCap.

Retro64 was founded back in 2001 in Chicago by Boeh. For the past 6 years he has done most of the design and implementation of the titles with a handful of artists and sound engineers at his side. They have created numerous titles including Venice Deluxe, Golden Pack Hyperballoid and Water Bugs across multiple platforms including PCs, mobile devices and consoles.
