The spam-like email that made my day... maybe

It's been a long time since i've been on these forums. At least a good six months or so... I played GalCiv 2 (pre-Dark Avatar) till I could handle myself in any non-cheating AI free for all. Anyway i was checking my email this morning (a tedious task usually with so much spam mail) and noticed that as a GC2 owner i have a coupon for 20% off Dark Avatar

This gave me a wild idea... I think i'll start playing GC2 again to get back into the swing of things...

Anyway, i was just wondering from a gamer's perspective, how different is Dark Avatar from the original? What are the main updates from the player's point of view?

I remember one thing that really p'ed me off back then was when friendly AIs going for influence victory built influence starbases in your home systems and there was no way to ask them to get rid of them short of buying them at extortionate rates or declaring war. Has this been changed?

I read a post about the Korath spore ships too... sounds very neat indeed.

Basically i'm just gauging whether i should buy this game off Stardock with the coupon today or wait till i could probably afford it and live the more 'sensible' (AKA boring) way.

Oh and one more thing - how long does DA take to download if i buy it from Stardock? I have a 2.2MBps Connection so i doubt that will be the limiter (it's quite an issue cause the mother has a habit of closing evreything onscreen when she comes in including downloads, completed virus scans (before viruses are deleted)...

Depends. If you download at the right time, it should be pretty fast. I have a 6 MBit connection, and I get the full speed from Stardock servers.

I can't answer you about the download times but the differences between the original game (Dread Lords) and The new one (Dark Avatar) are tremendous.

There are now 6 different planet environmets (one being normal) that each require research to be able to colonize. Means you'll still be doing some colonization later in the game.

Each race has a super ability. Additional Races.

More planetary improvement buildings such as fusion generator and research coordination centers.

The game plays differently too. Theres a lot more but you can probebely find an old thread that will expalin it better.

SO basically my opinion is that if you loved GC you should indeed buy Dark Avatar. I don't think anyone goes back to Dread Lords once they get started with DA. I haven't.

Sounds great! And after reading the forums a bit more i've decided for sure that when everyone in the house is asleep i'll leave the computer to download DA tonight. And i'll set an alarm for really early tomorrow morning (despite it being my holidays) so i can make the most of it

Thanks for the info!

I certainly haven't. DA rocks.

I did when DA had the major slowdowns, but not anymore.
