A Basic Question: Are the Races/Factions Hard-coded?

A Basic Question: Are the Races/Factions Hard-coded?

I really only have one question before I decide to give this game a try and that is whether or not the races and factions are hard-coded? Must I play as the Advent, Traders, Vaasari, etc. when I play the game in a sandbox mode or can I rename my race?

As much effort as I'm sure they are expending on the storyline, I find these games usually have limited appeal if the factions are severely limited.

I had already crossed this game off my list thinking the factions were hard-coded and that my dreams of playing as a Terran Empire were impossible in this game when I noticed on the interview at IGN posted today that the game did feature a sandbox mode (I had assumed before that it did not and that the game was built around a pre-written story highlighted by missions and targeted campaigns).

Thank you.

DFM, sorry, was upset about another game and took it out on you. The only game beta I've participated in on is GC2, working with Stardock is why I took this beta shot. I've been involved in commercial beta's, where they actually give you the beta to see if it solves your problem/business need. When you're talking about a large scale busines app there's a lot of things to test and as in any development project, the devs are too close to the product to see potential problems. You write the way you play (or do a given process), so they need outsiders who think a different way. And from what I've seen on this board most of the members/testers think in VERY special ways.

No problem, I've said things in the past on a bad day that i'm not proud of either. I'm actually glad i skipped posting on thursday had a pretty horrible day I might of said alot of things i didn't mean.

I want what alot of people want though a fun game that is new not somthing that keeps on getting recylced from game developer to game developer. In addition I have alot of dumb friends that judge a book by it's cover so to speak even though sins has a pretty good cover lol.

Oddly enough this one friend in particular would play earth and beyond and cnc3 but based on the theory of this game being like homeworld 2 he's like "this game sucks". Either I need to help with more ideas for this game or i need new friends lol.

P.S. A big LMAO to eetmorsqrls

... Dang it, no fair naming game engines with names that have already been taken! (Baldur's Gate and the like used the Infinity game engine, and oh boy did you just confuzle me.

and oh boy did you just confuzle me.

lol confuse you how? Also regardless of name stealing you have to admit that's a pretty sweet engine.

I was looking at tackling developing games in my spare time and i came upon that video lol. I thought about the developers here when they said that kind of micro management wasn't going to be possible.

I figure if it's a cool idea and wanted by alot of people eventually someones going to do it.

I never liked the star wars characters they were so chucky cheese like. All the star gate, star trek, and Andromeda characters were cool though.

I even joined the beta for the star wars game I wasn't too impressed though. But with that said with games of similarity in mind I’m not a big Halo fan either but Halo 3 is looking mighty good.

I've always wanted to play a game where you get to go from planet to planet in an fps. Even though Microsoft purposely delayed Grand Theft Auto another favorite game of mine in order to promote Halo 3, I still have the urge to buy Halo 3.

It's seems i'm helpless to rebel lol.

Don't hold your breath for Infinity. It'll be years and years before it is released at all. You probably won't be able to mod it as you like. It is shaping into a space MMO with a small team and no visible development budget.

DFM, you probably should watch your attitude and netiquette. You've caused a sizable threadjack lasting days, when you could have had quicker resolution if you politely asked in your own thread. Threadjacking is very rude in the first place, and then how you did it was rude and inappropriate. So then you just go exponential on the "insult scale" and people of course react to you.
