Diagnostics

I'm getting a pretty severe slowdown in game, but I can't seem to figure out what the bottleneck is. From what I can tell using my G12, my RAM and CPU aren't at full utilization, and its not just an FPS issue. Are there any diagnostics I can run to check?

What happens is the game is stuttering, going fine for a second then stopping. Mouse and graphics appear unnafected, though the tool-tips that the mouse brings up seem to be delayed everytime it stops (if I move the mouse right at the split-second "stop"). Only time I've seen anything like this was when I had a very large number of fighters sitting on a star as my "grand fleet" maneuvered to jump out to one of the local enemy planets. I figured then it was just the computer having trouble doing all the targeting calculations, but I don't think thats the case. This time around, instead of having a multi-stellar situation, I'm in a single solar system only with many (don't remember exactly, but 50+) planets in it. Maybe the tradeship calculations are slowing it down? But I don't get why that wouldn't be maxing out my CPU first...

Eh, well thats all to the good. I just realized that by digging into the custom creation options I could discover that it was actually set to 100 planets all in one solar system

That could do it, then. What are your system specs, anyway?

I can't imagine a computer without a mouse...

BTW, just to make it clear, I have a G15 plugin that lets me display my RAM / CPU usage "on the fly" while I'm in the game, and it does separate my two cores out, and neither of them was maxed -- it wasn't a case of one core maxed, the other's relative inactivity dragging down the combined percentage.

Cool, I guess... I like my keyboard nice and simple... Hence I own a Satiek Eclipse

You guys see that Logitech is putting out a revised G15?  They're getting rid of most of the programmable keys along the left side (though you'll still have 18 possible combinations) and integrating the LCD screen to the keyboard (no flip screen) while making it orange backlit.

No, but that sounds really cool. While the programmable keys seemed cool, I just don't use them as often as I would have thought. On the other hand, the LCD monitor is something I use a lot.

Same here and the G15 is too large for my keyboard tray at home (I've made it fit, but it hangs over the sides).  If the revised version is decent, I'll bring the old one to the office and use the smaller one at home.

Ooooh, another G15 lover?

But wouldn't your keyboard tray kinda block the LCD screen?

The revised G15's LCD is much lower than the original. It's like the screen is where the buttons are now (but raised slightly) with the buttons around the outside of it in a semi-circle.

Here's the new G15 (Link). Looks like it might be narrow enough for me to use one as well.
