Some random bugs/comments on 5B

Just had a sweep through the game. More to come later, perhaps.

General:

Numerous times, alt-tabbing or start-buttoning out stopped you coming back in again.

Initial screens:

Starting up fast is all very well, but stuttering for ten seconds afterwards and/or showing a big black rectangle really spoils the effect.

The "help" buttons in the party selection area seem unnecessary - there's space for it below, and it could show up when the party is selected. As it is these descriptions are far too "this is what you get"-based; some sort of short history of the parties leading to "and so you get this" would be preferable (maybe with the bounses in smaller lettering under the names or something similar).

Abilities could do with a lot more explanation.

Back button on second screen is one pixel to the right of where it is on the first screen.

IMO "Occasional" is less frequent than "Uncommon".

Again IMO, the alignment seems to scroll the wrong way. I associate good == better == more == to the right. I kept clicking the wrong way.

Some visual representation of how smart/good/evil the races are would be nice.

Some of the text repeated for some of the races. Altarian good/genius has the typo: "Be must be careful . . ."

If you click the races too rapidly then they "bounce" (one click != one disable or enable). Most of the time this happened when disabling and then enabling again - it flicked to enabled and then back to disabled.

Starting a game, then going to the main menu and then starting again results in the initial screen appearing but then all input is frozen. Similarly for loading a game.

Menu:

Overwriting a file and then changing the name while you save will prompt to overwrite but instead saves as a new file.

There is no cursor on the save/load/delete dialog. This makes typing save names a little hard.

Load and delete don't really need the textbox to select the file name, since you can't load a file that doesn't exist.

Delete save games dialog header is "String not found".

The load/save/delete dialogs do not indicate that the options dialogs are no longer available for clicking.

I turned the music off and on again and it didn't come back on again. Another time it froze the game (perhaps because it was too quick, did it twice?)

Modifying the music level automatically repainted the slider thumb and "Auto-save in X days" text even though auto-save was disabled.

The options are not obviously options. Checkboxes would seem a far better representation. The also "bounced" like in the player selection dialog.

Game:

At the start the music had some "ticks" - in the first five seconds after generating the game.

The initial screen could be scrolled far too far down, until the only thing visible is black space. Similarly, the little "Hello sir, this is what you do in this screen" boxes can be scrolled too far. It should stop at the end of the text.

Wheel scrolling is good - would be even better if it supported the middleclick-and-drag scrolling method.

There were some annoying clicks at the start of the music when beginning a game (after generation).

The research options list does not show whether it is being sorted by ascending or descending order.

Communication Theory does not fit into the "Now Researching..." box. It'd be nice to be able to explore the research tree more.

It seems to be *way* too easy to cheat and find out where everyone is with the Section Influence dialog.

The music transitions seemed a bit abrupt sometimes (especailly when the research screen came up).

Often when I'd answered a dialog the game would stop responding to input (the "we need a universal translator" one seemed to do it almost all the time).

Graphs screen shows Dec 357916 on left side at start. The slider on that window appears to do nothing.

'Graphs screen shows Dec 357916 on left side at start. The slider on that window appears to do nothing.'

The slider doesn't seem to be setable to anything below five months, and as a result, it's a bit quirky until June of the first year.

Brad,

Don't you remember the Green Reaper from beta testing GC/OS2? With a handle like that, how could you forget?

Thanks for the warm welcome! Yeah, I think I'll be around a while, this place is growing on me.

True to form, I've already managed to get the lowest score ever: http://www.galciv.com/metaverse.asp?page=3

Fun game. :-)

:) Brad remembers GreenReaper. GreenReaper beta tests for OD and also he was a beta tester for LightWeight Ninja. He gave the best reports for LightWeight Ninja. :)

In a pathetic attempt to boost my own bug reporting abilities to those of "The Reaper", who I do indeed fear, :) I would like to add:

The trade route information on the domestic policy screen is somewhat confusing.

First of all if established isn't recorded, it shouldn't be in the statistics.

I'm not sure what the turns and value amounts mean.

And lastly I think making the text that appears in the lower right hand corner smaller would greatly improve the appearance of that area, since each message seems to crowd the next.

Just so everyone knows, I wasn't intending to disparage anyone here, just to recognize all the help the Greenreaper gave me on my first real project. :)

By the last report, do you mean the event list that lists all the planets completed and stuff?

I mean the list that shows what events have happened this turn (i.e. Cari4 has produced a BattleAxe).

Also two more observations/bugs:

When a race offers you peace when you are at war, it brings up a stripped down version of the diplomacy/barter screen where there's only peace treaty. Your choices are accept or reject. If you accept you still have the same choice, and you can either keep on accepting or (nonsensically) reject to escape that screen. Not good.

Also on the stat screen there's an entry for overall stat (i.e. what place the terrans rank overall), but it's blank.

I have seen this as well Cari.
