Magnetised Space Mines

I dont know if there are already mines in the game, but if not, a great idea could be a mine that is inactive untill a passing ship gets within a certain proximity of it, and it magnitises and latches to the ship and explodes. this would be really kewl if there was a feild of them, making it a deathtrap for passing ships. the fields could be placed in important routes making it easyer to manage ur fleet, thinking that the enemy wouldnt go there. you could also predict that the enemy could bluff and actually try to pass through it, and take them out. There could also be an anti-mine weapon, like a gun that fires into the field and blows up some of them to make a path through the field. or a dummy-ship with no weapons or armour that could fly through. there could also be a mine that only explodes when a certain number of ships come within range, making it ideal for taking out larger groups. the mines could be self propelled, with a one-way engine, or could be placed by a minelayer. wot do u think?

I rather like this idea, as long as the mines can identify friend from foe, otherwise it would be very counter productive, but a great idea never the less

The subject has been brought up before in another thread, and didn't go much of anywhere.

Other ideas were "stand off" mines with some kind of IFF system (laser head mines, for example).

great idea i guess except for the problem that it would add much more micro managing than the devs can aford.

lol, they should b able to tell friend or foe, and could be detected by a special scans, and laid by a minelayer

also, an easy way to place them is to select your minelayer and click on the mine laying button and then it comes up with a draw tool and you draw a line (or a circle for a field of them) and then the minelayer will place them along the line (or in the circle). this could be a slow process, but would let you build mines without a second thought. u just tell the minelayer where to place them then just go about your merry business, to come back in a few minutes to find he has done the job and is sitting obediently by them As i said up top, there could be two types of mines, a cheap smallish sorta one that sticks to a passing ship using magnatism, or a really big expensive one that could explode when a certain number of ships pass into its range. these could be placed as options in the minelayers inventory. also to stop mine spamming, just put a limit on how may u can have. also, to get the job done faster, you could send multiple minelayers, and set the mine count to be 1 big mine for every 10 small mines or somthin.

Thinking of space minds, the best use I ever saw was when the Wormhole was mined on DS9.

I also remember that scene in Galaxy Quest where they used the ship to attract all the mines to attack the enemy ship.
