My piece of the pie

(Long day today - wrote this inbetween shifts)
Dark matter,
Here now, and
Forever after.
Coughing nervously,
At confident laughter.
Or would we rather...
Stoke the coals of old fires,
To reignite the piles of broken glass and
The remnant shrapnel of tires.
There we wait by the side of the highway
For a wrench,
Like a broken down cane-carrying old man
Sitting patiently on his park bench.
Like him,
We have prescriptions and voids to fill,
We need something to chase the aftertaste
Of this often,
Bitter tasting world.
The day boy met girl...
It all fell apart,
She pushed and she pushed and
It tugged on his heart.
Late night phone calls
Would eventually return them both to the start.
Nothing ends,
We follow procedure and process,
We never do it twice the same,
Unless we closely monitor losses and profits.
We're allotted...
A number of these pursuits and whims,
Provided we stop keeping track,
Of our good deeds measured by our sins,
Until we better measure up to what we've lacked.
Redemption comes with its own stubborn views,
Handed down by stout men,
Who Achor our aching backs against wooden pews.
When you carry the world on your shoulders
Most of the weight is on your knees,
While we're shackled in the stocks,
Onlookers point and laugh,
Dangling the keys to our locks.
In front of our eyes,
Just out of reach,
Leading us back to their stout men,
Commanding us to heed what they preach.
They unite us in rebellion against each other,
While telling us that every woman is our sister,
Every man,
Our brother.
We want to be citizens and lovers,
But we're not sure how,
Without a set criteria forcing us now,
We are only limited by the dreams we will allow,
To plant in the fields that we've so tirelessly plowed.
We've worked and worked and waited for our crops,
To surface the Earth watered by our sweat and tear drops.
Yet, we found only a single stalk...
Soon to be removed in the name of "progress" and "expansion"
On the site of the backyard pool for the master's mansion,
Then we wonder where they buried our passions?
They were mined to create the cornerstone of the new world order,
With our old world laws,
Discarding our collective progress,
While mandating all of our oppressive flaws.
I couldn't afford to purchase freedom
I'm working out a lease and
I'll eat my piece of the pie first,
If I'm ever invited to the master's feast.
