Does anyone use IE anymore?

Seriously. When I run JU in FF, I have to add html tags to my articles. Much simpler to use IE to run JU and not have that problem.

So JU runs in IE, 9Dragons runs in IE (it doesn't do as well in FF, either), everything else in FF.

I use Ie6 I never have seen any problem with it, I tried Mozilla did not like it at all, never tried FireFox, I tried IE7 and hated it, went back to six where it suits my needs.

I use IE7 for the same reason you don't, it's my choice. Really, that's what it's all about. Visually, all browsers appear the same to me, functionally I'm sure they each have little things they do. I've yet to have IE not work when I use it. Oops, looks like your bank made that choice too.

Choice, it's the one thing that no one can take away from me. I have to give it up, and that ain't happening anytime soon. You like FF, good for you. You made a choice and you are happy with it and I'm happy for you.

The way your post is worded I take it you have more than one computer. If not, and as you mention you are a Linux newbie why be concerned about Windows Updates? If you have more than one computer or doing dual boot it's back to choice.

Like you stated so well, just my thoughts.   

The answer to that is 'yes', and in a huge majority. Take a look at these stats Usage share of web browsers and you'll see that although FireFox has increased its share in recent times IE is still totally dominant.

For the record I use both. FF with its add-ons is useful for downloading large numbers of items (Download Them All). IE7 is the only browser I can access some sites with, and for moderating here it's the only one with all the admin tools working fully.

It's all about the plugins, kids.

I, too, seem to have problems with html tagging on the main JU page with Firefox. (Not so on the forums . . .) But with all my ever-loving addons, I can deal with some html. I mean, check it out - I've got the download manager to run in my bottom bar instead of popping up in a big box, I've got a new skin on it that makes it all shiny and black, I've got both spanish and english dictionaries and active spellcheckers, and i've got a media player remote plugged in the bottom right corner, so I can control whatever player I'm using (and when I say any, I mean any - really, really obscure stuff. I can even control my last.fm radio with it, people) from my Firefox page.

I understand why you guys may stay with IE, but I'll never go back.

I do. I have one dedicated Windows laptop and one dedicated Linux box. So I do have to get those updates every Tuesday still . . .

And I fully understand why IE is still so dominant. Most computer users don't even think about what's getting them on the internet. They just click the button that says "internet" and go from there, and couldn't care less.

But I love my Firefox.

Alot of the computer operated Audio/Video systems will only allow software upgates through IE , Some will allow me to use the IEtab addon for FF.Other than that FF!

I tried some plugins when I was using IE6 for the most part they were okay, but never really used them. Google plugins just caused me headaches. With IE7 I don't use any plugins. For me, streamline is the way to go.  



Just what is a browser meant to do? Get you to the internet, right, unless I'm really behind the times.   

I would add one more phrase "that it is made by Microsoft"

It does what I want it to do, I get what I need from it. If I am missing something thats essential to my life, I have no doubts someone will point it out, and some entrepreneur will produce it. So far I have seen no practical reason to change to another browser, and I have had a look at them.

Eventually a better Browser will get adopted by one and all, and doubtless I will use it if it meets my needs at the time. Meanwhile I am not into trying to be ahead of any crowd on these kinds of things, my focus is doing/achieving what I want to do/achieve with the beast, not spend my life tweeking it.

In the days of my youth I did the latter, until it penetrated my dumb brain that a 100% perfectly tweeked PC achieved squat, that 98% was great, and that I could use the countless hours spent previously on achieving the last 2% could be put to productive use.


Because they are happy enough that it does what they need from it. Your not, thats fine, use another as you do, the Sun will still rise in the morning either way   

Why doesn't anyone just use the IE Tab firefox plugin so you can view your IE only sites/pages in Firefox?

That's way to easy PurrBall.       

My answer is simple. Because it's integrated seamlessly into my Operating System and Office Suite, that's why.

Ask yourself why would anyone use a third party browser that you have to plug in god knows how many ways to make it work correctly with your operating system?

I started testing IE during the Windows 95 beta period back in 1992, went through 9 test builds before it shipped public August 24 1995 and have been using it since. I have never had a single problem with IE. I can accomplish everything on the internet that these other browsers claim to do just as fast and safe.

In the early 90's people swore by Netscape as the best browser in the world, and guess what, it died, same with Opera, AOL, Yahoo, Mozilla and now there's the FireFox fad. IE is still here!

I say to each his own, what ever works for you is all personal. But that doesn't mean that everyone who chooses to stick with IE is any less knowledgeable than let's say a FireFox user!

FireFox may be here forever, or it may not. But remember this much, as long as Microsoft makes Windows, there will be a Microsoft browser built in with it. Call it dominant, monopoly, greedy, or what you want, but it works just fine for some people.

People who bitch about IE sounds a bit crazy to someone like me that's never had a lick of problems with it after 15 smooth years. I mean what's the debate here? I use FireFox, IE is incorrect?

I'm currently running IE7 and it's my usual summary, it works just fine for me!

For the one's who choose third party browsers and all that you have to plug in, more power to you.

It IS about functionality. There are things I like to tweak, and things I just don't have time for. Most of my life is spent doing a million other things. When I turn on my computer, I usually want to get to the Internet.

And this is speaking AS a Linux fan. On my Linix machines, I use FF exclusively. ON Windows, IE6 and FF combo.

IE7 on vista, Firefox on kubuntu desktop.

Avant Browser on Vista, which like Maxthon and others, runs on the IE7 DLL stack. One in a while I find a page that doesn't load right, like Netflix for some reason, then I use Opera or Firefox depending on the whim that hits he at the time.

It seems like once a month the browser question comes up. The simple answer is use what works for you.

I know, it's not very thought provoking and doesn't allow for the endless discussions on the merits of one browser over the other. Bottomline is it doesn't matter.

And the reason is - bundling.  95% of computers run windows, you do not have to download IE, and most of them could not download a browser to save their life.  IE is the lowest common denominator.  But it is the most pervasive.

I use IE7, but I do have FireFox. I hardly ever use it though. I like IE7 alot. It lets me open more than one window at a time with little effort.. I can bounce back and forth between the windows. I have never had a problem with it. But I will say I think FF downloads faster then IE...

I use firefox mainly because of the "skinable" factor. It works well for me. I also use the "IE Tab" plug-in which allows me to switch rendering engines in cases where the site would run better in IE.

I agree.Seems to work pretty good for most things.

I mainly use firefox, only because IE7 doesn't work very well on Vista (at least on my computer it doesn't). Whenever i try to close a window in IE7, the window freezes for a min. and doesnt respond.

I used Firefox for tabbed browsing during the IE6 days. With IE7 and the free IE7pro plug-in I haven't used Firefox in a year and doubt I'll ever need to. But I'm glad it's out there to offer competition in the marketplace. MS got complacent and stupid and they paid a price for it.

Words of wisdom...

Personally , I use IE7 for automatic link apps, and firefox for all the rest.

I use IE7 and it suites my needs...that's why I use the programs I use, they suite my needs. I've honestly never tried another browser becuase IE has always worked and worked well for me. And best of all, about the only thing I've had to do is set up my multiple homepage tabs.

I use IE6 at work because well, I'm a website developer and since IE6 is still a major part of our traffic we have to pay special attention to it. I have IE7 installed on my Vista test box right next to that. At home I run IE6.

Why? (You might ask)

IE sucks. There's no doubting that.
Firefox sucks... inconsistantly. That's where the difference for me lies, and why I refuse to use the browser unless I'm A. debugging javascript or B. I've recently had a labotomy.
IE7 is straight out. I find it to be a less-responsive browser than 6. (and the fact that they havent fixed the 'Operation Aborted' issues really ticks me off) Aside from the tabs there's really not much reason for me to use it. Firefox and IE7 both have equal performance issues when opening a bazillion tabs. I could elaborate for a few more pages, but I digress. I'm not into addons, I've gotten spyware snuck onto my system using both browsers (And I'm a realtively smart intarweb user) so that's not much of an issue for me.

I would use opera except for its maddening interface. I find it to be the least usable browser of them all, however it is very consistant. Updates rarely break or radically modify both it's rendering and it's underlying engines. (Which is not the case with Firefox.)

But for me, I'll take the consistant sucking over the inconsistant.

If the Firefox yahoos (zealots?) come out of the woodwork to toss the same old rhetoric at me, please understand that I'm not interested in a debate, I just wanted to tack my thoughts onto this post because there were some other good replies.
