Invading a planet

How do you invade and take over an enemy planet? I can't find a technology that allows this.
Do you even have to research something in order to invade a planet? Or can you load up some troops in a certain ship and go attack a planet? If so, what ship?
Basically, I'd like a beginner's guide to invading an enemy planet. And how to make money, but that's another subject entirely. Sigh. GREAT game, but difficult to understand how things work.

In order to invade a planet you need to do a couple of things.

1. research tech so you can build transports (http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/Transport.htm)
or Combat Transports (http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/BattleTransport.htm)
2. Load up troops into the transports
3. Send the transport to the planet you want to invade (Supply an escort they are vunerable exp just the transports)
4. Remove all orbiting defense from the planet with you attack ships.
5. Once all the defense ships have been removed move your transport onto the planet you will then get a screen that ask what invasion tactic you want to use (For a list of those look here http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/invtactics.htm)
A battle will then commence and if you kill off all the defending troops you capture the planet.

Why are Combat Transports called Battle Transports after they are built ?

Just one of those naming things that slipped through the cracks. Production Bonuses are called Manufacturing Bonuses at a few points as well. They are called Battle Transports in the build queue as well.
