Anyone else getting raped by random events

Anyone else getting raped by random events

Every single game i've played so far where i've done good, the game just royally screws me over. IE the game i played today. I had 40 percent of the population, high tech, and a decent military, and all of a sudden this precursor race pops out of nowhere and starts whoopin me on the same month that a galactic recession hits and then everyone else declares war on me. What I found ironic was that if it WASNT the precursor race that attacked me I would've been fine because the major races can't kill my freighters (trade was a large part of my income) due to a UP council decision to protect freighters. Now i enjoy a good AI as much as the next but when they only care about killing me and random events coinciding with this kinda pisses me off. Just makes me wonder. Anyone else encountering this?

Not entirely sure how I feel about the whole issue in general but thought I'd share a "random event cost me the game" moment. Note this was my first game in a tiny galaxy.

My neighbors were all evil or evil-leaning races. Lo and behold the "Fundamentalist" movement pops up and, in one turn, takes all of the evil races. All of them. Now instead of several modest sized major powers I'm surrounded by one super-powerful "minor" power. A few turns later it turns out I wasn't good enough for the Fundies and they declared war. Game over a few turns later.

The fundamentlist event is actually currently a bug in how it's handled.

It's correct in 1.0 (CD version) but comes up much more oftne (every game) in the bonuspak/1.01a. Fixing that today.

i think some posters are seriously under-playing the problems some are having. for example, how is one to adapt to an enemy race having dreadnaughts while they are still on battleaxes?

you can be freaking captain kirk and admiral nelson but if you got a PT boat and the other guy has a nimitz class carrier.

i haven't seen this event yet but some people make it out like it's the players fault for not being able to adapt to dreadnaughts while playing with battleaxes. a simple: "make sure to abandon the colony" message would have sufficed. i especially liked the comparison with this event to the "the up took 5% of my trade revenue issue" :)

surther this thread is not about ridding the game of events or making it so they dont make the game more difficult. it's about finding a way to make them not completely end your game. As russell said.. how are we supposed to 'adapt' to an enemy with dreadnaughts when we have battleaxes? US troops are adapting, but they are not adapting to superior technology now are they? Not even superior numbers.

hey how about:
"you just woke up. never made any progress the last 10 hours you played. IT WAS ALL A DREAM. You have one star system with two low morale planets. Go back to bed."

And why dont I see an event screen about some OTHER frickin civilization that got a game busting event. Its always ME, never the other guy.
We need to toggle; events on/off. Those who love the excitement of losing a game to due a dice roll after all day play can toggle on. Those who dont want random events can toggle off. I "think" this feature has been included in other games..........

Also, if I want to play a cakewalk game that means I want TO PLAY A CAKEWALK GAME. If I want more challenge as the AI is ratcheted up, then throw in the randoms and the space sharks and all that stuff.

Something that may help (with all events like this): No AI ever starts with ships except for the major races on the first turn. If you can see them, you can always invade on the first turn after the event.

Every race that can have planets can be reasoned with diplomatically, although some are less trustworthy than others.
