Specific question about the beta

Hello, I'm really thinking of preordering this game since I'll most likely be buying it anyway because it covers my favorite genre; space empire building/rts. I'm a big homeworld and galactic civ fan.(also freespace and other space sims) however I need some quick info from anyone who has this beta I keep reading about. What exactly can you do in this beta? Is it strictly multiplay? Also how many different ships are availible to see in this beta? I understand this is only the head of the iceberg but I'm just bebating whether I should preorder it from stardock to try the beta or just wait untill release to buy it.
Oh one more question, if I preordered it right now would I be free to download this beta right now? I read somewhere about the 26th; just making sure I understand this correctly; great forums by the way.

This beta includes both single player and multi player, however the focus is on multi player.

7 (9?) logistic buildings
5 defense buildings
5 light frigates
4 heavy frigates
4(5?) capital ships

There's also about 4-5 different pirate ships. It seems small, but the game is amazing online.

O.o

Logistic Buildings: Metal Mine, Crystal Mine, Military and Civilian research, light shipyard and capitol shipyard, Trade Port, Refinery, and broadcast center.

Tactical Buildings: Gauss Cannon, Hangar, Repair Center, Phase Jump Inhibitor, and Planetary Shield

Frigates: Scout, Light Frigate, Flak Frigate, Long Range Missile Frigate, Colony Frigate, Siege Frigate

Cruisers: Carrier, Repair, Command, and Heavy

Capitol Ships: Kol Battleship, Sova Carrier, Marza Dreadnought (supposed to be a long range ship, but really just planetary bombardment at this point), Dunov and Akkan Battlecruisers (those two really need a better, more descriptive name for their roles)

Kol is Combat Battleship

Sova is Carrier Battleship

Dunov is Support Battleship

Akkan is Colonising Utility Battleship

Marza is Planet-Siege Battleship

although the marzan weaponry far excells that of the (supposedly) combat supperior Kol. I find that quite funny.

True... but put on up against a Kol and see how long it last.

Yeah, the Marza is just a big ship with guns, while the Kol was actually built as a warship -- it can take the pounding it gives

Well, I preordered the cd+download version four hours ago, and I spent those four hours playing this beta Snip snap I got immediate access didn't even have to wait for anything(except the download installation of course) and I just want to say I'm very happy I did. My hat's off to the devs. If a mere beta is this much fun, clean and easily playable(runs perfectly no problems) I can only imagine how great the full version will be. Really great game; and I'm feeling quite at home being a galactic civ player since alot of the buildings are similar; the graphics and planets are beautiful too. Anyway just wanted to update you all, thanks for the replies in this thread, hope I can see some of ya in multiplayer.
