Perpetual Entertainment has announced that their Rome-based MMORPG has been put on "indefinite hold" just weeks after a temporary delay had been announced. The news came via the Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising official forums from Chris McKibbin and chalked up the decision to a rough and crowded landscape: "The development team established some very lofty and ambitious goals when the initial work was started on Gods & Heroes. Recently, we took a step back to evaluate the competitive landscape, the game's current state, and the overall goals for our organisation[sic]."

"And while we are truly proud of and pleased with what we have created in Gods & Heroes, we also realize that achieving the level of quality and polish that we are committed to will take a significant investment."

Perpetual publicly announced Gods and Heroes back in March 2005 with the intent of releasing it for the 2005 holiday season. After missing that timeframe by a long shot the new release was scheduled for "Early 2008" and has been in beta since October 2006. Instead the developer will now shift focus to its other MMO property, one based on a very strong sci-fi license, Star Trek Online. STO is still in the early stages of development with no release window and no word of when open beta is scheduled.
