The Xeno-technologies and Terror Star technology

I heard reference to the fact that researching certain technologies defines one as a race. Are the Xeno- technologies like that? I heve several that I have been avoiding researching as I have an aversion to Xeno-words (like xenophobia).

Also, I think in a beta game I played, all the races turned on me after I researced the Terror Star. Is that a correct observation? I can't afford a war (and loss of my trade routes right now).
