Atari has announced that the first of a few downloadable add-ons for Obsidian Entertainment's well received Neverwinter Nights 2 will be available before the end of the year for an as yet to be disclosed price. The downloadable expansion is being created by Ossian Studios, the developers behind the NWN1 module, Darkness over Daggerford. The publisher has also given the title of the module, Mysteries of Westgate and some information regarding the story arc. Mysteries of Westgate's story will be based around an ancient treasure that the player receives. Eventually the treasure will lead to a city-spanning war, leaving the player to decide where his allegiance will land.
Ossian has stated that the campaigns should take around 15 hours of playtime, and include various other side quests that can lengthen the experience a bit more. The developer also explained that the downloadable pack will not be a half-assed attempt at a quick cash in. In fact the pack will come complete with a professionally recorded musical score and script, three additional companions, a new sewer-based tile set and naturally, plenty of new monsters. Mysteries of Westgate and all upcoming packs will require the original game to play.
Neverwinter Nights 2 received its first standard boxed expansion pack, Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, earlier this month. The Obsidian Entertainment developed expansion has also received generally positive reviews.
"Our premium module program for the original Neverwinter Nights was an enormous success due to the sheer amount of new, high-quality content we provided in each adventure," said Hudson Piehl, Vice President of Product Development, Atari, Inc. "With our new Adventure Packs, such as the upcoming Neverwinter Nights 2: Mysteries of Westgate, we are evolving the premium module: fans can expect higher production values, deep storylines, and lengthy new campaigns they've come to associate with Neverwinter Nights."
