DA 1.8 System Resource Requirements

Hesitant to ask and start another complaint post, but here goes (Seems we are all walking around on pins and needles this week!). I would like to update to 1.8 A of B or whatever is available. Trouble is I have an older PC and I am not building my next one until next summer when Vista has a patch or two behind it. I'm on version 1.61 which was a godsend, and smoothed out all the version 1.5 performance issues (just like frogboy promised) for my current Athalon 1700 and NVidia 6600GT (factory OC) with 1.5 gigs of memory. I stick to Large maps and occasional stars/habitable, and can't wait to go bigger but am resigned to now. So what I really want to know is whether all those wonderful changes listed in the 1.8 changelog will impact my current very satisfactory game performance. Anyone?

I have meager system specs myself and have had better performance with 1.8 than I did with 1.61, which after a while into the game would slow down immensely. For the first time I'm able to attempt a gigantic map. It hasn't developed quite enough yet to see what the playability will be like late game, but there is already a noticable difference in framerate.

Many of the changes in 1.8 are performance and memory optimizers, so I think you should at least try it. Archive your current set-up with the checkbox on the SDC DL page and you can always go back.

I'll try it out, with the archive back-up.

Since there seems to be a problem (see here https://forums.galciv2.com/?aid=165545 ) with the archive function of SDC, be sure to copy the created backup in another directory

Took all the advice. I know the changelog promised improvements in performance, but I am always wary of beta material. In any case, I was overly cautious. Performance has been almost on par with DA 1.61, even with all the improvements. The gameplay tweaks are fantastic. Still not upgraded to 1.8C until I am sure none of the reported errors won't apply to me.

Looks like I will have no choice but to buy the new expansion (and plan the next upgrade of my computer). I am hooked.
