Publisher THQ, developer Relic Entertainment and collaborator Iron Lore Entertainment have announced the second race in the third expansion pack to Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. Soulstorm will feature the already announced Dark Eldar as well as the Sisters of Battle according to Gamestop.
Although its unusual for an RTS to receive so many expansions, the team of THQ and Relic, and now Iron Lore of Titan Quest fame, have managed to keep the series fresh by constantly adding more content with each expansion. Not only does the Games Workshop licensed property have plenty of material to go around but the firms have also been releasing the expansions as stand-alone games, allowing players to come late to the party. Soulstorm will not be an exception to either of these rules as we are already privy of the addition of the two aforementioned races and the stand alone nature of the title.
Dark Crusade, the series' previous expansion had its campaign set across and entire planet. Soulstorm has trumpeted this by spanning four planets and three moons. The title will also introduce air units into the franchise as well as the popular 'Achievements.' The single-player campaign and single-player skirmishes will allow for play with all nine of the announced races, but multiplayer skirmishes will require the older titles if a player wishes to play as any previous race.
Although relative newcomer Iron Lore Entertainment has taken over the development process for the game, it shouldn't stray too far from the series' roots with both Relic Entertainment and Game Workshop looking over their shoulders. The addition of air units can been seen as the difference in approach that Iron Lore has brought to the table, and of course the older races will receive new air units to balance things out. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Soulstorm is scheduled to be released in the first half of 2008.
