Morale?

Alright, I've seen alot of threads about low morale on planets, no matter how many morale boosting improvements are made.

But I thought the equillibrium point was Morale of 50? If it's higher, population increases till it's 50. On planets where I've built tons of morale improvements, the population is much higher at 50 morale than it is when I first colonized them.

So is there something that I'm just not understanding? What's the real "morale" issue? Are planets freefalling below 50 for some people?

The problem is that population *growth* depends heavily on morale, and morale depends on population (for any given planet class). This is also known as a first-order differential equation :p

Each time you boost morale, you arouse the dormant libido of your minions, who proceed to produce more taxpayers for you until things get a bit too depressing, domestic friction heads back up and all the menfolk get back to sleeping on the couch. So there's a natural tendancy for morale to hang around the 50 mark.

The way you beat this is to build/acquire morale upgrades faster than your people can breed. You do this via techs, reducing taxes, morale resources (*very* useful!).

IMHO, the morale zero-point should be shifted up according to certain conditions. Perhaps part of a planet's morale boost should be applied *after* doing the growth-rate calculation, say 1 point for every 25% boost... a kind of 'free' morale boost.
