This Game is Illegal

I am one of the active developers for Solar Empire: the open-source project this game seems to be based upon. This message is to simply let the developers here at SoaSE that if this game is ever released, you will be hearing from our lawyers. The only people with the rights to produce a video-games based up on SE are Michael J. A. Clark (mJac) and Moriarty, the project administrators for Solar Empire. If you feel the need to discuss this further, feel free to reach me by my business mail: [email protected]

O crap.. does that mean the people from ID can sue Epic Games? Since they were the first people to develop a game where you walk around holding a gun and shooting things?

Hmmmm, yes, yes, yes...
Would you care to elaborate on the similarities?
Just curious to know...

I decree that since the project he speaks of is a open source project, it has no rights, nor do it's developers. So, SoaSE is allowed to continue, and release. xD

Why would you post this on a forum, I mean, its like saying "Look, I'm retarded, throw stuff at me".

Yep.. as always. You might as well sue Avaya since their entire telephone system is run on a linux platform, although heavily developed. In truth there is nothing an open source community can do, but be scare mongers and shout unfounded accusations.

I love them.. such drama queens.

lets look at it from a pragmatic point of view. as far as I heard this game has been in development for quite some time, a few years probably, and concepts for it likely exist even before that. it shouldn't be too hard to IC to prove that this is a proprietary effort and product and it is them who made the game what it is.

commercially releasing unmodified freeware is surely not ok, but even if - IF - part of the game is based on freeware, it sure as hell has experienced a great deal of enhancements and modifications, so these assertations are rather void as I see it.

That's not even possible. Quantum Star / Solar Empire is a PHP browser-based game (a clone of the old Tradewars / TW2002 BBS game, by all appearances). Entirely different language (PHP vs C), basis (BBS-style text game vs 3D RTS), core game mechanics... pretty much everything, aside from being in space and with "solar" and "empire" in the name. Which is hardly unique to either game.

The OP makes serious accusations, though. Personally I'd expect someone to do a bit of research before making such claims.

Well Like I said...

Open Source community has always been a bit of a Drama Queen.

Every time a company release/sells something that remotely looks like it might be similar to something they have. It must be a copy... and then the accusations start.

But enough... I think we have fed the Troll enough. Lock this thread and handle it internally since it is a serious accusation.

lol, this reminds me of the time that guy cloned the sins website but just changed the name everywhere to some other name (Darkstar something if I remember correctly...) and claimed that Sins was just a rip off of his game. That was laughable too.

Sure, but what would he expect from a group of ppl that loves this game.

I don't even see why he wouldn't post it as an advertisement instead, as this just makes ppl starts laughing and he brings shame to his own game.

Kryo is right, though my comment was fairly rude as well, there is no need for us to pay any further attention to this thread.

they just jelous that their game hasn't gotten any attention from top leading pc game editors.

any name with Solar Empire has already left a stain for lust of victory as my sin.
Well too bad they don't have a copyright. N00bs.
now now, i dont have a copyright, but you still arent allowed to clone me, as long as they can claim the idea was their intellectual property, they have an argument
