error (crashing)

some help with a problem?

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate, and having an error with some .dream files playing properly. I am curious if anyone can assist me with solving the problem.

What happens is this, on some .dream files the video will play fine, on others the video shows for all of about 5 to 10 seconds, but without any animation and then crashes with an error.

The error message given is "Windows Dreamscene has encountered an error. Click to see More Information" in a pop-up bubble, then after clicking that it says "Windows Dreamscene has encountered an error. Windows Dreamscene has encountered an unrecoverable error while decoding the video."

Here is the information on the version of Deskscapes I have installed if it is of any help:

My system is an HP Pavilion a1250n, with an AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+ 2.0Ghz Processor, 1024MB of DDR RAM, a 250GB SATA hard drive, and a PNY Geforce 7300GT PCI-E graphics card. I currently have the latest updates from Microsoft for Vista installed (but not the preview release of SP1), and also have the latest video drivers for my video card installed.

In addition, if it is of any help, I also have the latest versions of Quicktime, Divx (including the player and encoder from the official website), Realplayer, and Java installed.

In case this is the cause of any conflicts I am experiencing, I am also using the latest version of AVG free antivirus and Windows Defender as my antispyware ap.

Any help solving this issue would be really appreciated. There are some really cool dreams I'd like to check out, but am unable to do so thanks to this error.

i would try uninstalling Divx as a 1st option.

yeah, get rid of the divx and also when you update your video drivers do you completly remove all files associated with the old drivers? nvidia drivers when installed over older ones do not replace certain files...that being the nvlddmkm.sys file..if you need to reinstall again wipe that file from the system32 folder and the system32/drivers folder as well....hope this helps......

Ok, for a bit more information; I ran the uninstaller for all the Divx products on my system.

I've not updated my video drivers. Vista Ultimate was installed on this machine recently, and I installed the newest video drivers right after the initial installation of Vista.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Quicktime and RealPlayer in case either of those are causing the issue. I've made sure each is set using the defaults that come with a standard installation.

I've also come across something else weird. Through another forum, I found out that Deskscapes makes a .wmv backup of .dreams that are run on the system. I've located those on my system. In the case of the problem .dream files that will not play on my system, those .wmv files won't play as standard Dreamscene backgrounds either, even when copied to the default folder for Dreamscene on the system.

In case this was also an issue, I did check, and according to Vista, Windows Media Player is set as default for all its defaults, so I am unsure what the problem could be.

I am uncertain what the differences are, but they will not even play in Windows Media Player. However, the backup .wmv files for the .dreams that do play, will play in Dreamscene folder and in Windows Media Player.

As an example; The Matrix Code 2.1 Dream plays fine, the Super Mario Brothers 3 Dream crashes with the previously posted error.

do you have the final version of dreamscene? UAC turned off? DEP turned off? all strdock is up to date? yes the dreams will play in media player as a stand alone player but when dreamscene is running and deskscapes you may run into problems if everthing is not up to snuff..what version of the forceware driver did you install? you should have installed the latest beta driver.....uninstall quicktime, and get rid of realplayer..go into your reg and wipe it clean of divx and realplayer and nvidia to make sure, also make sure when you uninstall your video drivers that you check the to folders i told you about in the previous post........check back soon
