Updated Tech Tree For Download Now

I've made some corrections to the old tech tree and put together a 70% zoom version that should display tech and project bonuses more clearly now. All tech trees are now located at:

Great thing about Irfanview is that is resizes the picture to the papersize you have in your printer. That way it gets the whole picture on one piece of paper :)

Whoah, this thread got big :P

I haven't been able to load up your site. So if you could send me all the files (including the html page) and I'll just toss it all up on my server.

One, I sure wish Brad would put a sticky on this thread so it is easy to find.

Two, on the next update of this tech tree could you at least identify which is a social build and which is a starbase module? Ideally, I'd much prefer a tech/module tree for just the starbases. Right now, I'm having problems figuring out what to research next for the next starbase module. At present, I'm just wandering around blindly research stuff and hoping a new starbase module appears in one of the research descriptions. :( Possibly the tech tree based on what you get for modules from the start with a starbase and what you need to research to get the next. :)

Yep, this deserves a sticky. This tech tree is great, no more constant alt-tabbing out of game! And it's not as confusing and convoluted as... er.. others.

"Advice how to print it off and be able to read it on my computer please."

On one page, it's impossible. If you want to format it so it's spread out lengthwise for printing on multiple sheets, that might work... otherwise, you're gonna need some kind of poster-printing machine to make it work.

I prefer to simply Alt-Tab out of the game when I need to look something up.

Stregone:

You can download the tech tree from aerol's site, which should be much more reliable than both of mine:

Scott:

I'm still trying to decide how to distinguish the social/military projects, starbase modules, trade goods, achievements, and wonders from each other on the tech tree without adding too much clutter. I tried adding varies shades of color, but that didn't seem to interact very well with all those arrows zipping through them. I'll keep trying different combinations and see what I can do, although I still have some reservations about adding more arrows to indicate starbase module requirements.

Zah,

Thanks for replying. In reply to your reply, how about a separate tree for starbase modules and the tech needed to get them? Possibly that's the solution. Giving this a bit of thought, possibly that's the solution for all of it. :D Separate tech trees. One for starbase modules, one for social, and one for ship. That would reduce down what needs to be shown, the number of arrows snaking around everywhere, and possibly ... just possibly enable each to be printed off on one page.

I see its in the Encyclopedia, under the Unofficial FAQ. Also, for printing I used Microsoft Publisher to a poster type page. If you happen to have that program you might find it useful. Just don't download anything over the 70% zoom because I couldn't import the 100% file.

Hmm, I added a comment to that first link, should have said that it may or may not work, due to my host being flaky right now, hence the angry face :P

Nice job on the tech tree. It is so usefull.

That said, I am a bit surprised there is no tech tree in-game, at least to sum up the previous research made having an overall view and to know whats coming the next step but more cleary. Cause the current system, without the help of player-made trees, is like driving blinded unless you know it by heart (which is kinda hard).

Something like Civ3 or Ascendancy tech tree would have been nice.

What's it going to take to get this sticky'd? This tech tree is exactly what the game was missing, I'd think StarDock would pay you to be able to host it.

I'm going to spend some more time and see if I can integrate the starbase module requirements into the tech tree before I pull them out and make a seperate tree. One option is to expand the size of the current tree slightly to fill the empty space and make room for some more arrows. In the meantime, you can still look at the specific item bonuses to distinguish starbase modules from normal planet side structures. With the exception of "trade" where a "Trade Monument" can be built on planets, all starbase module bonuses cannot otherwise be derived from planetary structures.

Making some modifications to the tech tree and I need some input. Are any of you remotely interested in the research costs of social/military projects, starbase modules, trade goods, achievements, and wonders as listed on Javascout's page? I'm considering replacing those with build cost and maintenance instead, but I just wanted to double check first. Quite frankly, I'm not even sure why these items have a research cost associated with them.
I don't understand why they have a research cost either. Personally, I don't care about seeing the research costs, and I would like to see the actual military/social build cost.

I just played my first full game with your tech tree printing out and wow, the game was so much more fun not alt-tabbing every few minutes. (And SOOO must easier to understand then JavaScout ;p )

Out of curiousity, why does "Smuggling" appear on the Tech Tree? (To the best of my knowledge it's just a MOD you can download from the library and not part of the released game)

mlepinski:

I just grabbed every tech I saw in Javascout's database, so that is a question he will be more qualified to answer. Maybe Smuggling was included in the first bonus pack? I'll admit I haven't seen it pop up in my games, though I rarely have the prerequisite alignment for it either.
