A note from Hindenberg:
This was a great game! We both had Sovas but I was able to get a trade network going. That gave me the edge with the economy but Ruin is better at tactics. I got a second cap ship and took out his Sova but he built a TON of frigates and took out my Sova too. He established more colonies that I did and, at that point, I thought I was toast but I was able to get a colony going myself which was just enough to keep up with him. I was able to keep the pirates on him the whole game which also was a help. This was one of the best games I've ever played of SINS.

Thanks for running the tournament!

Hindenberg

**All will be meeting at IRC channel #sinstourny

Q: How do i join that?
A: Run stardock central, click chat and connect. Then type in /join #sinstourny. If you use IRC, connect to the irc.stardock.com server and /join #sinstourny. Please use your ingame (ICO) name.

** Connection issues

If a player drops in the first 30min of the round, the game will be restarted. If a player drops any time after 30min he/she will automatically forfeit. If the game is restarted and the same player drops again at any time, he/she will automatically forfeit.

** Complete game crashes

If the whole game crashes, we will deal with it on a case by case basis after watching the replay. We don't expect this to happen as it's historically rare, which is why we decided to go case by case.

Q: Then what do i do, if this happens?
A: Report to #sinstourny with your group

** Teams

Teams have been randomly picked by using an online random number generator. As there are no 3-player maps, we have decided to add Hard AI as players since we didn't want any planets to be free for grabs.

Teams will be LOCKED FFA. To avoid any issues with an alliance accidentally winning the map (sorry, only one player from each game gets to move on to round 2!) and to have everyone on the same footing, after much discussion we decided not to leave teams unlocked. We encourage people to realize that just because the "ally" buttons are disabled does not mean there is no room for any inter-player diplomacy, and we encourage everyone to explore those options.

For any questions or concerns, either post or contact Multianna or Annatar, and we will do our best to address them. But keep in mind, we're pretty set on these rules so unless you discover something horrible that we missed, they are unlikely to change!

Thanks everyone for signing up, and HAVE FUN!

The winner of the 3 rounds will be receiving 5 tokens

Which can be used on TotalGaming.net

Multi, silly question but how are you "donating" the tokens? Last I checked, you can't give tokens out to people as gifts or anything.

I dont see what would be illegal about it...
You never seen other fansites doing it?

BTW multi, how do you plan on handling the maps? If you want (balanced) custom made maps... I can and will provide. I'll even swear oath that I won't provide them out beforehand for anything less than, say, 50,000$ -- and I'll split half the take with you Since I can't be in the tournement myself due to scheduling, that'll at least give me a little chance to "participate"

(More seriously, I'll swear that I will not release them -- to anyone -- until you give me the OK).

Ouch

No offense to Ron or his generous offer but I'd prefer to see the tourney played on maps that come with the game for several reasons.

1. It will minimize any potential hassle with downloading custom maps.
2. Keeps us testing the included game material which the devs need feedback on. No offense to the map makers but their maps are their problems. The ones that will ship with sins are the dev's problem.
3. Allows the participants to prepare for the tournament. I you use a new, previously unreleased map then everyone will be playing it cold which means that luck will factor more heavily into your success than would otherwise be the case.

Furthermore, I would like to see the maps made known at least a week prior to the start of the tournament. This goes with point #3 above in that it gives the participants an opportunity to investigate the maps and plan their strategy. Only a fool goes into a tournament unprepared. When I was involved with tournaments in Homeworld me and my teammate(s) would always check out the maps that were going to be played on and hash out what our strategy was going to be. We didn't win by accidentally finding the juicy resources first, we won by by having a superior strategy from the start of the match and using that advantage to drive home the victory.

Of course Multianna and Annatar are free to run their tournament in whatever way they see fit but that's my 2 cents.

Come on, this should be fun and not a "I am the greatest" tournament.
A few non standard maps would be cool but we should know them a few days before the tournament starts

This is exactly why we're not releasing the maps. They are going to be of the scenarios in game now, not random and not custom/user made maps. The problems with releasing the maps early are:

1) Maps depend on the number of people playing, and signups close on the 5th so what's the point of naming a map and then changing it at the last minute anyway?

2) People will just play the map to death to figure out every nook and cranny, how long it takes to get from one point to another, yadda yadda. We don't want a winner who won because he knew the x,y,z coordinates of every other homeworld from having practiced that map 30 times prior, we want a winner who knows the game and can be thrown into any situation and adapt.

We didn't win by accidentally finding the juicy resources first, we won by by having a superior strategy from the start of the match and using that advantage to drive home the victory.

Considering that we'll be using scenario maps in game now, nobody should be finding anything 'accidentally'

So no, sorry, we're not going to tell you guys the maps far ahead of time
Reply #86 Top
I like the idea of not knowing, it becomes more a game of skill instead of what happens if some guys memorize the whole map beforehand and others don't get that opportunity.
Thats why I like random maps myself. You don't always get dealt a 'fair' hand so you have to roll with it and adapt. Mark of a good player imo is one who can beat the odds.

Normally I would readily agree, but in Sins smaller random maps can be too random sometimes. We don't want anyone feeling jipped out of a possible win by the random map generator, that's why we decided to use premade ones instead. It especially goes screwy if there aren't the exact number of players the map is designed for.

Good point however with surprise maps you can still end up with a winner of this type who just happened to have played that map 30 times before. The difference between the winner who practiced the known maps and the winner who just happened to have practiced the right map is that #1 won because of planning and preparation. Player #2 won by dumb luck. Knowing the maps ahead of time helps to level the playing field.

However a positive for your method is that it rewards the more well-rounded player - one who has a little experience on all the maps stands a better chance of making it through 3 rounds than someone who has put all of their time and energy into one or 2 specific maps. Knowing the maps ahead of time would allow the participants to focus only on the tournament maps - thus being better at those maps but not necessarily better in general.

Again, I don't want to argue about this - you have good reasons for running the tourney the way you are and I don't have a problem with it - but I just wanted to point this out for future reference.

Thanks Your points are valid as well, and perhaps if we do more tourneys in the future we can do it that way, when most people have more extensive experience with the game.

Anyhoo, we've got 21 signups now! Need at least 3 more for a nice well rounded number, but the more the merrier so sign up or we'll make eet eet all your squirrels and other cute fuzzy animals!
