Black screen instead of GCII

Black screen instead of GCII

I last played GCII some time ago after getting the Dark Avatar expansion. It has been a while and for some reason when I try to play now, the screen goes mostly black and I cannot see anything. I can ALT+TAB but the blackness is impenetrable... except for the Start menu thankfully so I can do a graceful reboot.

The things that have changed are that I have a new monitor and a new sound card. Of course I also have recent Nvidia drivers for my GF 7900GS. I tried changing my desktop reoslution from 1680x1050 to 1024x768 but the only difference was that the entire screen was back where before I did have a small strip of desktop on the right. Ah, well also I was able to bring up an ALT menu for GCII and select Close and it actually worked, maybe that is important. Previously I could not even ALT+F4 GCII, requiring a reboot.

Any ideas?

Try updating your video drivers--your current ones are from 2005.

After 2 hours of scouring the internet, I found the latest, manufacturer-specific driver and installed it, but no dice.  The only thing that has changed is the date in my debug report.

Are you running any other apps that may be using the video chipset? With the latest drivers, an Intel 945 should definitely be able to at least run in software mode.

Nope.  Is there any other useful information in my debug report?  If not, then it must be a deeper problem with my computer, because it doesn't run any of my other old games, either.

You might try reinstalling the latest DirectX available for XP, but that's just a guess at this point. If nothing is working then there's definitely something odd going on at a system level.

Thanks anyway for your help, Kryo, I really appreciate it.  Maybe in a year or two I'll get a new videocard or a whole new computer, and then you can bet that the first thing I do is fire up Galactic Civilizations II (and maybe even spring for the Twilight of the Arnor expansion).

Kryo you may be able to help

I am playing TA and for some reason when I try doing a screenshot the screenshot is completely black

I am running the same on Windows 7 (saved from Windows XP older PC) on bootcamp on my PC and have had to download an application to run screenshots called Gadwin Printscreen which seems to work fine print screening other stuff but not the screens from TA for some reason

Any help appreciated but sounds like this could be a related issue...

Success!  It came to me in a dream, in which I turned on my computer and Dark Avatar started miraculously.

So, this morning, after determining that it was in fact a dream and the game still wasn't working, I was filled with the vigorous spirit of repair.  So, I went through a plethora of methods, including disabling my driver entirely.  Finally, I stumbled onto the Troubleshoot tab on the Advanced tab of the Display settings.  The hardware acceleration was set to None (as recommended for computers that are having graphics issues.  However, sliding it around I discovered that one level disabled all DirectDraw and Direct3D accelerations.  I turned it up one past that level, and restarted my computer.  And, upon starting up the game, it worked!  It goes VERY slowly, but with all of the graphics turned down, I believe it will work.

Thanks for all of your help, Kryo, and I hope this helps other people with problems, too.

Thanks for this thread.

After updating to 2.04, and re-installing from a fresh copy, I got the "black screen" error. At first, I could not believed that this problem, several years old, was not solved yet (installation process should carefully check the current settings and adapt accordingly the resolution).

Upon visiting this rather old thread, it simply worked after manually editing the ini file...
