+ Manufacturing and +Starships, what exactly do they affect?

Just like the subject says. For manufacturing, does that bonus apply to things in both the military and social queues, or what? For starships, does the bonus decrease their construction costs or does it make them more effective in some way?

Manufacturing affects starship building.

Starships affects the quality of the starship and gets applied to the attack and defense values (maybe also the hit points, can;t remember)

So +manufacturing doesnt affect social production at all, just stuff in the miltary queue? What planetary improvements speed up social buildings, any?

manufacturing also applies to social projects.

i think ship quality only affects hitpoints (at least that's what the manual says).

Heh. They need to make your stats right clickable so that you can see exactly what they affect/benefit.

I still am not clear on what exactly +manufacturing is, it would be nice to get an official word on whether it affects social, military or both.

I get confused as to the difference between bonuses to manufacturing and an increase in manufacturing capacity. This is not covered very well.

Manufacturing is the speed at which you can build stuff. Each point of manufacturing cost 1$ to use it, so if you have 10 shields you can spend 10$/turn to build the item. I believe, however, that the 10$/turn is reduced by your social / military spending rate. So if your spending is only 50% you're actually only progressing 5$/turn towards the project (I think, though I haven't quite confirmed this).

Increases to Manufacturing increase your available manufacturing as a %. If you have manufacturing 10 and you build a +10% social project you're now at manufacturing 11, allowing you to build stuff faster.

Some of the manufacturing boost you get is free, it counts as a $1 spent towards the project without costing a $1 from the budget. This is the number after the "+" in the display. So 10 + 2 means your maximium manufacturing is 12, but it only costs 10.

Theres an article in the Encyclopedia that explains this part better.

The encyclopedia has a good explanation for how this works.

The starship bonus only applies to the planet that is doing the building.

Nothing...consider them to be interchangeable.
No doubt a legacy of a rewrite somewhere...just like Combat Transports and Battle Transports...same thing.
