One possible AI suggestion

This may be different on higher levels, but so far it's proven true on "Normal."

When the AI is beating on a starbase that it expects to destroy (I'm not talking about hitting a starbase with 80 HP left with a battlecruiser), it should bring a constructor along, or have one not too far off.

One reason I'm doing well in my current game is because the Drengin and the Torians are in a war, and they're both my neighbors. I'm playing ethical ferengi, staying out of the wars as best possible, but if a starbase gets weakened, I'll get several constructors in the area so that when it goes boom, I can get a starbase with fully upgraded defenses on the resource within a turn or two. It works because the AI never brings constructors along in the assault force.

In the current game, this saved my but because I snagged two econ resources and upgraded the mining on them just before a chain reaction war caused most of my trade routes to shut down.

Funny, a good person suddenly being at war with the other good and neutral AIs and his only trade partner being the Drengin :)

either that, or it should realize when you've "stolen" a resource in that manner and demand the starbase.

on a related note, the drengins (who, amazingly were at peace with everyone) once "stole" a resource after the had arceans destroyed one my bases. this was on intelligent.

cheers

What difficulty are you on?

I'm only using 'normal' for all the majors and they're a bunch of resource mongers!

I'm on "Normal." I'm not saying that the AIs aren't resource mongers, I'm saying that I saw it coming and got constructors into place so that when the starbase fell, I was 3 to 4 times closer than the AI constructors.

My suggestion isn't to make the AI go after resources more agressively, just anticipate that if it destroys a starbase on a resource, there will be a race for that resource, and it should get a head start seeing as it knows what it is planning.
