Install/Play on Emulated Platforms

Has anyone had success getting GalCiv to run in an emulated environment?
I installed the base GalCiv in a Virtual PC 5 (PC and Mac) Win 98 / DirectX 8.1 system, and it will not run. Stardock runs fine, but when I start the application (full-screen or windowed), it changes resolutions but then hangs the machine at a black screen. No intro movie, no menu screen. Trying to end task does not work.
The graphics for Virtual PC is emulated S3, and every resolution and color depth you could want. Could it be part of the bink video? Is there a way to bypass the intro fluff and see if the game will run? Is there some diagnosis to perform to isolate the problem? Would a demo copy of Virtual PC be helpful?
I know that other PC games from Blizzard software work fine in the emulated environment.
It certainly would be nice to play GalCiv on my Mac PowerBook. MacSoft ported MOO3; perhaps they would be amicable to a porting of GalCiv as well. Especially if sales are going well...
I am almost tempted to find a broken-down P2/400 1024x768 PC laptop to tote around, just to play GalCiv, but only if necessary.
/me dreams of MacOSX native GalCiv, but will make do with emulated.
