Front page:

Beta 4 Closes on Monday
11.29.2007 10:18:48 AM

Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 4 will be closing to new pre-order customers on December 3, 2007. If you'd like to take part in the game before its official release next year, now is your last chance to get in on the action!

Pre-order page:

Beta Status: Closed. Pre-orders will not be charged until the final version of Sins of a Solar Empire is released.

So, it's not like they didn't mention it. Twice. Not gonna be charged yet, in any case.

Indeed, you won't be charged until release if you've preordered after the close of beta 4, though your bank/card co. may place a 24-48 hour hold for the amount right now depending on their policies (it'll be dropped shortly though).

I think the forums can be quite misleading. If you look through the entire history of the Sins forums, public opinion has been very very good. However, people's praise doesn't lend itself to the creation of lengthy or bumped threads. Also, since it is beta, we've asked people to write up what problems they are having so we can fix them so it gives the appearance of negativity. Finally, a lot of the players have been around for a long time and have already delivered their praise but are continually, and actively hunting down bugs and potential problems so that's all you really hear about. It's probably a bit much to ask anyone to search through the whole history to see what I mean but here is one thread that tries to collect some people's non-bug report opinions.

In summary, an open beta tends to lead to the appearance of a game that everyone hates even when they don't, but its worth doing because with the community's input the final product is just so much better.

Doomslayer, don't give up on this game -- either get it via TotalGaming network now or just wait patiently for the release. Its worth it.

Sense beta 2 -- six months or so ago! its been as stable, if not more so than any Blizzard game I've ever played. More bug ridden, true, but thats the realm of a beta. Add into this a game that, ignoring the lack of singleplayer mode due to a poor AI, is more fun than most released games and you have the components for a truly awesome piece of work, especially once we get the new components like the Advent race, the diplomacy system, and fleets (formations) -- not to mention whatever the devs haven't mentioned or released yet.
