How do you complete a trade route?

In an earlier DA game I simply landed a freighter on a distant alien colony by occupying the same space. But in this game, when my freighter got to a distant alien colony the game refused to let me move the frighter onto the colony space. Thinking the problem might be that the alien had to have the trade tech, I opened the relations screen and sold him the trade tech for whatever he would pay, so I know we both have that tech. Now what else do I have to do to be able to land on his colony planet and complete the trade route?

Is it possible that I missed something in setting up the game conditions, not the options, the basic conditions of the game like glaxy size etc.? Do you have to specify that trade is allowed?

I checked the manual pretty carefully and didn't find the answer there, but I didn't go back and do the tutorial again. If the info I need is in tutorial, please just reply "Tutorial" thanks.

Thanks you for your replies.

You are only allowed a certain number of trade routes at a time, depending on your techlevel in trade. In your domestic policies window, go to the 'Trade' tab and have a look. Unless there are still open slots, you won't be able to establish a new trade route.

Or.... you forgot to put a trade module on your ship or put a different module by accident on your ship.

OOPS! You got it...I created a fast, long range freighter template and didn't put a trade module on it. Call me Bubba.
