Windows version shown on desktop.....

Since installation of Vista SP1 RC1

Since installing Service Pack 1 RC1 for Vista my windows version is shown on my desktop:

Is there any way to disable this info. or is it something which Microsoft will remove upon release of the final version of SP1?

Thanks in advance. :)

I think it's there until the SP goes live.
You could try here

Thanks Zubaz,I think I'll sit tight till the full release. With my record with registry tweaks I could be heading for dangerous territory otherwise  ;) .
TBH I was more concerned that I had just missed a check box to disable the desktop info. when I installed the SP but you have cleared that up for me.Cheers Zubaz. :)

You cannot disable this without using a hacked dll file. It is harmless and does not impede the full functionality , but it's Microsofts way of reminding you that you are using an Evaluation copy of Vista. Did you get it with a technet subscription by chance?

I was in the same boat. I switched to Vista Business x64 now.
FYI, another treat I found with SP1 RC... my Anti-Virus app, Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 did not recognize SP1 as a supported OS and stopped functioning.
SP1 made my system run quite a bit better but I simply did not want to live with those items. Hence the switch from evaluation version of Ultimate to non-trial of Business x64.

Hi Phoon,no I got it through automatic updates after downloading the registry file (to enable this to be done) from Microsoft's website.
I must say it seems to have speeded things up a bit but nothing much else. :)

Oh right...No I don't have the evaluation version,it's the full version which came with this HP pc.That info just appeared when I installed SP1,it's weird.
I uninstalled SP1 but this still shows on my desktop. It's like it messed up my system validation or something. (:(

Ok so I ran my registry cleaner and rebooted, the desktop has returned to normal without that info. on it.
I'll wait for the full release of SP1 I think. :D  :NOTSURE:

Hey Phoon,do you have any idea what may have caused this ?I mean I have OEM Vista yet when I installed the SP1 it showed on my desktop as an evaluation version.I'd be really grateful if you have any insight into this.  :)  :NOTSURE:

I had read a thread addressing this issue and assumed that it was due to the fact of my having the technet eval version of windows. Perhaps it was indeed because of the fact that SP1 is an RC. Here is a link explaining it and how to get rid of it.
Damn annoying it is...

SP1 is considered in evaluation until it is released.

Thanks for the link Phoon,it made interesting reading and quelled my fears that I had "un-validated" my operating system.Cheers man.
Thanks for the info. GreenReaper.
I've uninstalled the service pack now and I'll wait until it is released in full.
Thanks lads and Merry Christmas to you. :)
