Making alien aggressiveness optional post 1.0

It bothers me that I've never played a game where some race doesn't go after military superiority in a big way and where that race doesn't *always" choose to attack the militarily weakest races right off the bat.

Unless I am just playing wrong and don't know it, I'd prefer a game where the alien's choice of what kind of end-game to pursue is not automatically a military one first and foremost. Certainly they should keep track of what's going on and try to keep up, but that doesn't necessarily have to lead to a vicious cycle of competing militarys that always ends in war.

The game has so many other interesting aspects, but I am always forced to gain military superiority and then I achieve a cultural win simply because my superiority always depends more on resources, productivity and research than on warships and the sheer numbers of Terrans guarantees overwhelming cultural superiority. In fact, besides military, cultural and technological, are there any other realistic win conditions left? Are economic/trade wins even possible?

I'm not slamming the game by any means, I just think that it has the possibility to be a lot more subtle and interesting if war wasn't always so inevitable.

Maybe a choice of initial conditions (post 1.0) that allow you to decide on a game's warmongering factor with a slider? That would determine things like how close militarily is "close enough" for a race to be comfortable; how far under militarily triggers a panic buildup; how likely it is that a particular race will go after a military win as opposed to some other; how likely it is that there will be a UP issue voting on the sharing of all military technology (rather than all technology) from that point on; or how likely it is that races will vote to share if that comes up.

That UP issue might be worth considering in 1.0 if enough of the necessary plumbing is in there (I know, I know, 1.x). :)

I also think, in a way, that galactic resources contribute to the run up to war. Perhaps an option to make galactic resources work more like real-world resources. That is, make them randomly finite and allow new resources to appear randomly (be "discovered") throughout the game. That way, even if one race has a lock on all the military or research resources, they might not forever. And the more heavily they mine those resources, the quicker they are going to run dry, so it would behoove a race to balance immediate need against the benefit of keeping capabilities in reserve.

I like your ideas, and to help along the same line.

The current goals are based on a competition between AI's. Are the AI's capable of cooperation?
If so, multiple other goals would be gained by requiring the IA's to cooperate to acheive the goal.
For exemple a goal could be, for all the AI's, get to 100% morale, for all planets to have no social projects left to build.

Yes, and perhaps one way to implement that would be different kinds of alliances.

For instance, you can ally to share certain branches or sets of technologies; or you can ally militarily or for mutual protection. And a military alliance would have your partner(s) proposing to you to start a war against somebody or you proposing to them to start a war and you both have to agree.

Or you can ally to share different kinds of galactic resources (so an alliance to share your morale resources for instance give each of you an 80% return each on two shared resources instead of 100% return on your own single resource by combining efforts and leveraging economies of scale).

And the victories would include your allies: "You and the Drengin have won a Gustatorial Victory by successfully allying together to consume every single member of every other race down to the last man, woman, child and automated unit with the aid of advanced sauce technologies that you cooperated to reasearch. You would do well to put your combined experiences to work and begin researching indigestion-fighting technologies!" Okay, maybe not that one, but it suggests that maybe you can have multiple tech goals that you can accumulate through various alliances. That can also open up the game a little bit if you allow players to cooperate in places like this to come up with lots of different tech win paths, serious or silly. Hopefully alien-flesh marinades will not be one of them.

I forgot alliance victories in the first message, but in a way what you are saying is that you and your allies are required not to just to get the alliance, but to achieve the goal of the alliance, even if every race is on board, which opens up the game a little more too.

In terms of AI aggressiveness I strongly agree.

The AI is good enough and the game designed appropriately for the AI to primarily pursue a victory by means other that war. For good and chaotic good races, Arceans, Torians, Altarians, they SHOULD use warfare as a last resort I would suggest yet in the latest builds they have been amongst the first to declare war on me which didn't used to happen.

In terms of enjoyment, personally this is reduced when Galactic warfare breaks out right across the board making you focus on material and war tech output. When the slow potboliers for superiority via culture and tech settle in its great. Recently though I havnt had many of the latter.
